Govan Subway Station

At the moment Govan subway gets 3 stars from me, I find it a useful stop for the shops, a boat trip to the Riverside Museum, café 13 and the Pearce Institute, but at the moment is undergoing refurbishments so it is a bit of a poor state of décor in some places.
The subway and bus station are both being refurbished, will be great when they’re all done!

A fine, modern station at a busy transport hub for the south side of the river. The station itself is bright, has a nice wee shop, friendly staff and is well laid out. It has transport link with the bus station right outside, and is walking distance of shops, pubs and all sorts of things that are generally A Good Thing.
Last stop on the Southside before you enter The People’s Republic Of Partick on the Subcrawl, too!

I don’t think Govan Underground has underwent much of a change despite the surrounding area being vastly modernised, with the addition of the new ticket gates it’s made entry and exit much faster however the actual station is still a little dark and dingy.
On the plus side theres free wifi now, and it’s right next to the shopping centre.

Haha. ran out of coffee shops to review, so i thunked I’d review this underground spot! Really? Yip… I’m going for it!
Despite the reputation Govan has maybe had for the past wee while, it’s only through ignorance that this ‘yikes’ myth still exists.
With the moving of the Transport Museum to just across the water and with the rumored resurrection of a wee passenger ferry running from Govan, you can see where the thinking has come from behind the recent renovation of the stations exit area.
New and shiny (ish) greets you as you depart/​arrive at the stop, however the interoir itself still feels stuck in the 70s (the brown part of the 70s… I swear these guys must have been stuck in an office whilst everyone else was out getting wasted and talking to goats about Honey Badgers and Barnacle Geese). Wooft, back again.
Anyway, stations are stations. It’s really what they bring you to and away from that makes ‘em. This yin ain’t too back considering. Right now the highlights have to be the cracking wee charity shops that have popped up of late, selling gear that would cost you at least 2 – 3 times as much in a West End joint.
The best of these, for me, is that shop that operates under the Magpie banner (wing?). Great range of clothing, jewelry (or so the female one tells me) and furniture that really should be going to auction and not selling for the ²⁰⁄₃₀ quid mark.
The Unity charity shop is also nearby, and both of them make an absolute mockery of the vasty overpriced BHF shop which lies between them.
For me, this is a real uncovered gem for vintage hunters. So therefore the station is to be thanked for that alone!

One of the bigger tube stations, this one has a London-​type feel until you actually step outside.
It’s got a wee news stand inside, and is near a shopping centre and bus station.
Not a hell of a lot near here to help mark it out as any more memorable than Cessnock or West Street really, but the station itself is clean with friendly staff and super close to the bus station here making it an ideal transport link for any locals.

Govan Underground is the bane of your life when you’re in a hurry to get anywhere by subway. Just when you think you’re going to make it, your drive will, without fail, stop here for 5 minutes as he swaps roles with a colleague. It should take 20 seconds. It doesn’t.
The station itself is one of the betters ones on the circle on account of it being a large commuter hub given the location of the bus station next door. It also provides a little kiosk which stocks papers, sweets, cigarettes, juice etc…
However I would take what other Unilocalers have said about the area with a massive pinch of salt. Having had family who lived near here for years, I can assure you Govan is still rundown and rough and not an area you want to find yourself frequenting on your own at night.

Passengers alight at Govan for the Southern General Hospital, The Pearce Institute and Govan Old Parish Church. The first train at Govan Subway arrives at around 6.30am Mon to Sat and 10.10am Sun. The last train terminates at the station at around 11.30pm Mon to Sat, 6pm on a Sunday (it is worth remembering the last train terminates in Govan so you don’t end up stuck there.) A single journey costs £1.20, a return £2.40 and an all day ticket £3.50 A newsagent based inside the station provides a well stocked range of crisps, soft drinks, confectionery and newspapers.

Govan Underground is a strange stop, because it seems so disconnected from the rest of them. It’s only two stops away from Kelvin Hall, but it’s a world apart.
Located in the South-​Side, it’s the Glaswegian equivalent of visiting the suburbs. Govan is a self-​sufficient wee district (town? village?). Not exactly the type of place you’d visit on a day out; more like where you’d live and then commute into Glasgow city centre or the west end via the subway system.
There’s loads of buses at the terminal adjoined to the station, as well as local amenities like the shopping centre, church, schools, and so on. Not nearly as bad as the reputation that precedes it, but not exactly somewhere you’d rush to discover.
Generally, then, more rural and family-​oriented than student housing and clubs. A good subway link nonetheless.

Govan. Ok, it has a bad reputation, but I honestly don’t know why. It’s like a tiny village located within Glasgow’s South Side. There’s a shopping centre, schools, and other local amenities… the subway stop is a gateway to all of this.
The bus station on the otherside of the building also plays host to a mammoth number of buses to wherever, and the staff are friendly and helpful (I got lost on my way to visitng someone in the Southern General, and not only could they tell me where and when to get on and off, they also told me landmarks to look out for «Aye… you’ll see a house that’s still covered in Christmas decorations — auld Cauldwell’s place? — well get off at the next stop.» This was in May).

This stop, in my opinion, has the least sity-​like vibe of them all. Govan is it’s own place, with all its own amenities.
An (admittedly, fairly crap) shopping centre, churches, schools and everything it would need to survive if it were to be cut off from the city. The station itself is fairly big and busy.
It’s a very working-​class area. When I say working class, I mean actually working, and not just wandering around smacked-​up.
I have never felt threatened here, despite its reputation, and it’s a good stop to get off and have a wee wander about.
