McDonald Vets

This is a great vet and for me could not be more conveniently located! Getting an appointment is easy, and they let you know how long it will take so that you can plan accordingly. I had to reschedule an appointment and it couldn’t have been easier to do. The receptionist has a brisk but friendly demeanor and is more than happy to explain any charges and discounts. She informed me that I could get a reduced rate if I had my cat chipped at the same time that I got her vaccinated, which was a great idea! The waiting room is very small with minimal décor, but is a pleasant enough space to sit while waiting.
I took my longhaired tabby Marmalade to get her vaccinations and flea/​worm treatment a couple of weeks ago. No matter how I try and disguise the supermarket brand tablets, she just will. not. eat. them. Last time I tried this tactic I just ended up wasting them and having to buy more, so really it works out cheaper to go and get the back of the neck treatment from the vets! She’s a verrrry skittish kitty and hates being in her carrier so having this place just a minutes walk from my flat is a huge help!
The vet herself is lovely and was very good with Marms, and the treatment of flea/​worm/​vaccinations itself was over in about 10 minutes. We did have to wait a little while before going in but not more than about 15 minutes. Next week I’ll take her back to have the second round of vaccinations and get her chipped as well. All in all I was very happy with the price and service, glad to have this as my local vet!

A couple of months ago i took one of my cats for a health check and to my surprise and shock was told by one of the vets that she had a category two hart murmur and to consider getting her an x-​ray at the cost of £140ish but to go away and think about it so i did, but something didn’t sit right with me and i decided to get a second opinion, so without telling the second vet what i had been told i let him examine her and he told me she was fit and healthy but slightly over weight at this point i told the second vet what i had been told by Mcdonald’s vet, he was surprised and said that he would check her again just in case he had missed it the first time, he then spent several minutes giving her a thorough examination and told me she definitely didn’t have any defect. I am absolutely discusted with Mcdonald’s Vets, we all like to look after our pets and times are hard without someone who is supposed to have your pets welfare at heart and takes your hard earned cash for the privilege. So be warned people. ps i have just realized to publish this i have to give a star rating so unfortunately i have had to click one star but if i had a choice would click minus ten.

Took my puppy here for her routine vaccinations to be moaned at that she was very wet (it was a torrential down pour outside) and then left quite upset at being informed that she has genetic defects and the Vet warning me that she shouldn’t be bred from. She is a pet, and I didn’t intend on breeding or showing her any way, but don’t appreciate being chastised in this way!
Also, after leaving the surgery after the second vaccination received a phone call warning me there was an outstanding balance that had not been paid. I paid for the vaccinations upfront when I booked my puppy in at reception during the first visit, and explained this to the person who called, who said she would have to check not at all sounding like she believed me. Fortunately I paid by card, however I was going to pay cash but changed my mind at the last minute, and am so glad I did as if I had paid cash, I would have not been able to prove that I had paid (as I’m prone to losing receipts, and not sure one would even have been issued).
Overall left feeling quite annoyed and upset, and very much doubt I will use this vet again, which is a huge shame as it is just around the corner from my house. However, I would much rather be treated with respect and pleasantries than what I received today.

Excellent vet, who I have been using for many years, and who has treated several pets. The practice is ‘old school’ and does not have an unnecessarily fancy surgery. Can sometimes come across as off-​hand (just the way some people are!)…perhaps this is why the previous review is so scathing. He has years of experience and this is evident in treatment provided to all sorts of pets. It is clear that he cares about the welfare of the animals he treats, and is not out to rip people off… unlike so many other vets experienced. He is extremely thorough and has excellent staff working for him. He could do with learning how to use his computer better though!!!

Not only were we mocked, disrespected, and subject to condescension, but we also had to put up with veterinary treatments that seem to fly in the face of current research. Ignorance and crotchetiness are not qualities to seek out in a vet. Fairly cheap thoughfor what it’s worthwhich is not much.
