They are quite wonderful. As I get older, I start to appreciate classical music all the more, and the SE have a good mix of the old school and the latest composers: they performed local hero James Macmillan’s Seven Last Words to a spine-​tingling effect last year. Not the largest of orchestras, they nevertheless bring grace and passion to their selections, and are constantly touring– at reasonable prices, too.
Known for involving students in their concerts, the SE are one of Scotland’s brightest hopes for introducing the young to the splendours of the old. They have taken on the big names at the EIF, too– and shown that the homegrown team can compete with the big international names.
