Oh dear. Toby’s is the equivalent of the student union at Strathclyde’s Jordanhill Campus except it doesn’t sell alcohol(except for a small window on a Friday), isn’t open in the evening and people only go here because there is nowhere else to go really. I came here a few times when I didn’t have any other option and every time wasn’t the fun or relaxed or even cheap experience you’d expect in a student union. The décor is grim — trying to be cool and trendy with its metal tables and chairs and random mental bars everywhere but it just does not work. The food isn’t great — very limited choice(baguette, baked potato, chips) which is usually all sold out by about 12pm and pricey for a uni place. And the staff are nippy! Once a friend joined us with her own packed lunch(the rest of us had sadly all been subject to Toby’s grub) and was told in no uncertain terms that she had to leave. I understand that kind of thing in a bar or restaurant or café but in a student place where she wasn’t taking up an extra table or anything(& the place was half-empty)? It seemed a bit harsh and her tone was so rude you’d have thought we were vandalising the place. Similarly, when another friend took a seat one morning to read the paper before heading to class, when there were only two other people in the place, he was told to leave. After that experience we all went to the café across the hall whenever we had to eat on campus. I’m trying to think of something positive to add but I really can’t.
