WE too stayed here one night while walking the wall. Staff is very friendly, but things seem a little disorganized. Maybe we just got there on an odd day. Were shown are room, which has a sloping roof, so watch out if you are a little claustrophobic. Little things were missing form the room(like bath tissue!) and other odds and ends. They were happy to fetch for us, but odd that it wasn’t ready so late in the day. A word of warning, the rooms over the family room/pool room can be very loud if other guests are up late and using those rooms. And really these ones are not really suitable for 2 people as there is barely room to move around with the sloping roof. ON the other hand, the food is very good here. Someone knows what they are doing in the kitchen and a nice selection of wines. I would say the food is 4 stars but the bed part is the three star issue.

We stayed at Saughy Rigg Farm while walking Hadrian’s Wall in August 2011. The rooms were a decent size, but the furniture was quite dated. There were several spiderwebs in the corners(and several spiders as well) that made me wonder how often the rooms received a thorough cleaning. The bathroom was very small and, like the bedroom, very dark. In other words, the accommodations were comfortable, but hardly luxurious. And it was a bit hard to get over the run-down yard, viewable from our table in the dining room. The owner’s husband was extremely sociable and polite — he made us some wonderful cocktails before dinner and told us a bit about the area and the farm itself. He was also kind enough to give us a ride back to the Wall the following day, which we greatly appreciated.

After a good soaking on the Wall that day. We were immediately shown to the drying room. 30 mins later, after a hot shower in the acceptable room(could really do with better towels and soap), we sat in a bar with the most amazing ultra sonic Guinness machine.wow. We had a decent meal and sleep and breakfast. It looks like a gasto pub on the website but it really isn’t(might want to clean up the yard — view from conservatory.). It’s fine, and given the location, helpfulness of staff, and lift back to Wall, good for them.

Situated about 1 mile from Steel Rigg Car Park along Hadrian’s Wall, this b&b has more than just location working for it. The old stone farm has a view of Hadrian’s Wall to the south which provides for a fabulous winter sunrise. The rooms are fitted with modern quality furniture, each with a different character. Meals are served in a separate dining room that is private for guests. The food was delicious and its presentation gave the sense of home cooking. A little more care and attention to detail in the presentation and fittings of the rooms combined with a heated passageway to the dining room would make this a four star rating(which is what the sign at the farm attests) Arrival: We were told it might be difficult to find the farm in the dark, however, we had no trouble locating the large Saughy Rigg B&B sign. The stone entry drive leads past several buildings to the glass entry. It was a bit confusing as to where to park, but as we were the only one’s there on this night it was not a problem. We were greeted upon entering and promptly given our key and shown to our room. Family Room: This room was well equipped for parents with two small children. In addition they were able to set up a cot for our third little one. A small flat screen tv made for easy watching as we relaxed before dinner. The beds were well fitted with warm blankets, and they were needed as the night wore on. In addition there were two small electric heaters that we used to complement the hot water radiators. The bathroom had well appointed tiling with an open shower right into the room. The detailing of the room was lacking and the open shower meant the room was wet and not easy to use after someone had taken a shower. Overnight the temperatures dropped to –6 degrees celsius and the cold water lines froze. This meant the toilet stopped working, teeth were brushed with hot water and only hot water was available for the shower. Fortunately, because the adjacent room was not occupied we were able to use its bathroom. Dinner: To begin we were served rolls and butter. Then a parsnip soup was prepared as an appetizer and it had a lovely creamy sweet flavor. We had a choice of fresh trout, lamb or salmon for dinner. We tried all three amongst us and were not disappointed. We requested small portions for the girls, and they kindly obliged. A wide range of vegetables were also prepared for us; baked broccoli with cheese sauce, sliced purple cabbage, peas, and baked carrots. For dessert a baked chocolate pudding with vanilla ice cream was delectable. Overall, the service was very good. They were very apologetic for the freezing of the water and gave us a discount on the final cost. There is a good thing going here that is very convenient for people hiking and exploring Hadrian’s Wall. A few further touches and this place would be highly recommended. Video link:
