Wilfs Café is a friendly café and outside catering business located in Staveley Mill Yard, nr Kendal in the Lake District. Difficult to find and not obvious even when you get into The Mill Yard, Wilf’s Café deserves to be found for all sorts of reasons… Based in the old Bobbin Loft with some of the old line workings still in place, we have traditional seating plus a cosy sofa area inside plus decking over looking the river Kent for warmer days. The Café offers great breakfasts, daily specials including meaty, veggie and fishy dishes, home-made cakes and afternoon teas. The menu offers good wholesome, value for money meals that are all cooked on the premises. Local ingredients & specialities are used including free range eggs from a local farm.

Much more than a Café we are available to hire in the evening for all sorts of functions, private dinners, parties, AGM’s, presentations. We can provide a buffet at your own venue for all sorts of occasions & celebrations. And if you are just having a get together with some friends & don’t feel like cooking there are our «Wilf’s Away» meals in 8 portion sizes, ready to just pop in the oven.

History

Established in 1991.

‘Wilf’s’ was originally a café above an Outdoor shop in Ambleside, run by Iain Williamson, generally known as Wilf from a school days’ nickname. It gained widespread popularity amongst outdoor enthusiasts.

A chance discussion amongst friends, including Charlotte Webb, resulted in a trial appearance at an Orienteering event over in Eskdale selling a basic menu to the competitors. It was a success. The popularity for ‘Wilf’s’ food at events grew and with the closing of the original café by the owners of the shop, Wilf and Charlotte became business partners and put all their energies into developing the event catering, which went from strength to strength.

Keen to open a new café and open up new opportunities for expanding the business, here we are! Tucked away at the back of the Mill Yard, many said it wouldn’t work but we perservered. The Café has really taken off as has the rest of the yard.

The Event business was sold last year to concentrate on the still growing Café.
