Since it’s been done up it looks nice. Good atmosphere. A bit on the pricey side, beer wise. Really nice food. A great bowling green if you’re into that kind of thing. Gets really packed when the football is on! Well worth a visit if you’re around Old Swan.

The location isn’t exactly awe-inspiring, sitting on the drab thoroughfare of Prescot Road and looking out across a mid-lane car park and a shopping arcade. However, the Black Horse is a solid, reliable pub whose attitude should be taken on by neighbouring drinking holes. It’s a building with a grand exterior and while this may not continue with perfection inside, there’s a relaxing time to be had sitting in the bright hallway at the back, looking out across the bowling green, which you can pretend is the rolling Cotswolds for that delightful rural delusion.

What a pleasant surprise from the dark, dim place it was. Bright, airy and well furnished. Good beer and a lively atmosphere. It’s an ideal place to meet up for a few drinks before heading for the brighter lights. But do return and enjoy the banter of a real local with down town service.
