Crepes are one of those things you either love or hate. People that hate them think they’re old fashioned and frou-frou. They can’t understand why anyone would choose a crêpe over a plump danish pastry, buttery croissant or big stack of pancakes. People that love crepes think they’re timeless and refined. They can’t understand why anyone would choose a messy and flaky danish or croissant over something so warm and easy to eat. For those that fall into the latter camp, I give you — Café Des Crepes. A humble eaterie in Formby, they sell a great range of sweet and savoury crepes cooked, flipped and folded to perfection. There’s classic combinations like lemon & sugar, chocolate & banana, spinach & feta and ham & mushrooms alongside more cosmopolitan flavours like smoked salmon & cream cheese. Every now and then I crave a crêpe suzette but usually, I’m a pancake gal!

I’ve never really seen the attraction of the crêpe and honestly I’ve never really been able to tell the difference between the crêpe and the pancake. What is it — what is the actual difference? Maybe there are none. If you know, then answers on a postcard please. Having uttered all of that anti-fried dough sentiment I very much enjoyed coming here — there is a pleasant atmosphere here. It is a light and airy shop which smells, unsurprisingly, of cooking pancakes. The friendly staff are led by a smiley-faced self-made former Tesco staffer and everyone seems genuinley happy to be working here which is brilliant. The crepes themselves are okay but no better than that(I’m yet to be convinced that crepes can be any more than just ‘okay’) they are a little expensive and some of the savoury options — smoked salmon — work better on the chalkboard than they do on the plate. Still, if you’re into pancakes then there is definitely nowhere else to go in Formby and I mean that both figuratively and literally.

I come to this part of the country every year & I bring a group of college students with me – it is great. So, you can understand my excitement when I noticed a brand new eatery opened up where a craft store used to be. Most especially as this brand new place is a CREPE place – oh la la! This is quaint little shop off the main high street in Formby. It has a very warm & welcoming atmosphere, plus you get greeted by lovely aromas upon entering(so good!). They have 2 levels of seating, 1st floor has smaller tables for about 2 – 3 people, while the 2nd level can accommodate larger parties which is nice when you are with 8 to 9 people. Service is quick & friendly and they are gracious enough not to make fun of our American accents. Now let’s talk crepes, oh my word they are delicious & the portions are generous. They have it all, savory & sweet crepes plus they have panini’s & regular sandwiches as well. On the 2 occasions I went, I opted for savory crepes & let me tell you – yummy! Not only do you get the light with a hint of sweet crêpe filled with whatever you want, you also get a small salad with it – great! They also have good strong coffee and a variety of other beverages. If ever you are in this part of the country, stop on by, you won’t be sorry.
