Despite the prevalence of bars and restaurants along South Road, I still tend to consider it a place for essential shopping rather than a place to eat, and definitely not a place for tea drinking. There’s just never been anywhere alluring enough, but, on a drizzly Monday afternoon I sought refuge– and the obligatory cuppa– in COFFI. I’d had a look in a few days earlier and it looked nice, it was, very nice. . The design of the place is quite varied and depending on where you sit I think you would get a different impression; there are comfy leather sofas positioned in the window for discreet people watching; beautiful walnut wood tables surrounded by photo canvases of the local beach, an area which feels more homely and are little more ergonomic for dining, plus a more secluded sofa area beside an open fireplace, beneath the pièce de résistance: a beautiful original stained glass window. The counter is a zone of its own, with a vibrant red base, gleaming coffee related gadgets, and overhanging red lamps; it could all seem incongruous, but it works. Great service, great atmosphere and great tea. The scones were going down well too.
