This isn’t the worst place on Mathew Street. Hell, with the nearby Smokie Mo’s now in full swing it’s almost tempting to visit. Don’t though. It’s just not worth it. It seems a cruel twist of fate that the location tourists are most likely to visit is the one where they’ll find people you don’t want as Liverpudlian ambassadors. When I visited Lennon’s Bar I found the far end of the dance floor packed with jitterbugging housewives out on a jolly. The music was the usual fare but somehow seemed worse and the ceiling was really low. I practically had to take off my scalp to walk in, or just duck I guess. If you’re a dwarf who loves listening to deafening Beatles songs being talked over by a smug DJ, this’ll probably be right up your Mathew Street.
