Given the relative lack of Turkish restaurants in Liverpool compared to London, and the fact that this one advertises burgers and tuna sandwiches on the menu, we weren’t sure what to expect. Our experience was mixed. At any other Mediterranean place the mezes are a no-brainer; at Shiraz they are best avoided. Our mixed meze for two came with three boring, almost identical tasting yogurt dishes and a kind of chopped pepper dip. We wondered why the mixed meze didn’t come with hummus or tahini, as the menu promised this would be a sample of all starters, but at least our server brought us a dish of hummus on the house when we asked. Our muska boregi reminded us of Indian samosas more than anything Mediterranean; this wasn’t an issue for me, but my partner was disappointed. The«spicy Turkish sausage served on bread» came without bread on a plate. We were not off to a good start. The mixed grill was a marked improvement, however. All the meats were juicy and cooked perfectly, and the chips(to my surprise) were especially tasty. The house wine went very well with this part of the meal. The service left much to be desired for the first part of our meal, when the staff seemed focused on a very large group finishing their meals. Once these left, the staff were more attentive. In fact, the busier-than-average night may explain our lackluster appetizers, as(so the server informed us) the restaurant had begun to run out of key items, including baklava and hummus. Cautiously recommended, if only for the grilled meats and chips.
