Been there today, bit iffy but ok beer was fine, Karaōke kicked off with some attention seeking Strange guy, with a elderly dog all a bit disconcerting for a visitor, the locals love it, so sorted!

This pub doesn’t seem to be too popular despite it’s fantastic location on Waterloo’s South Road, it’s literally a stone’s throw from the train station and marine lake. My entrance to the establishment wasn’t too friendly as there were a gang of men standing outside smoking. Once inside, the pub was dingy as any natural light that could have been gained from the windows was blocked out by a number of England flags. Drinks were moderately priced but the pub had no charms so I wasn’t tempted to stay. Somewhere to drink, or use the toilet, and that’s about it.

This is one of the few pubs that I have ventured into in the Garston area. Not all have been of my own volition, some I have stubbled across others I have entered willingly but until today The Alex had evaded me and I’m sorry that I had bothered — although if my Unilocaling curiosity hadn’t kicked in I still probably would not have bothered. The reason that many others do not go here is that it is situated at the bottom end of the village between an almighty crossroads of bypass and Horrocks Avenue before you reach the stretch leading to the Speke retail but the lack of customer services from the underused bar staff will not help its cause. As I entered the gloom I saw only several old men and women scattered about the place and decided I would nip to the loo before grabbing a drink — the scene in there was a bit like a Partidge moment as an old fella struggled to go(‘I didn’t think in my 20s I’d have to push!’) Hastilly leaving I was accosted by one of the old women I had assumed was a punter who bullied me to get a drink for using the lav — there is so little to do they just join in the daytime drinking! Little else to report really — quiet and a little depressing, mind you the Saturdays must be a real belter ?!

The Alexandra, set in the ground floor of a small, cottage-like hotel, takes the simple approach — to provide its customers with a peaceful environment in which to forget their worries in the company of friends and neighbours. A pint of lager will only set you back 1.70, while their guest bitters start at only 1.30, something which has created a loyal male clientele as their customer base. The doubles bar including premium spirits is 1.79 and entertainment to support such good prices is provided by live music at the weekends. Good pub for watching football at the weekends
