The Blackbird Bakery makes everything it sells fresh everyday, including bread, a range of pastries, savouries, sandwiches, juices, cakes, teas and coffees.
Not all that much to rave about. The coffee is okay, and while I do appreciate being asked if I’d prefer one shot or two, the end result isn’t the best I’ve ever had. It’s pretty average. We ordered a couple of pastries(almond croissant & pain au chocolate) which were a bit chewy and tasted a bit bland — I suspect they may have been a bit stale too. The ice coffee was more milkshake than actual caffeine — though maybe this is because the café seems to cater more towards families rather than die hard coffee fans. I’d give it a miss.

Great place for fresh baked bread and a cup of coffee. It gets crowded on weekends, but there really isn’t other cafes in this end of Herne Hill that does it better.

My friend lives right by this café and I believe it has moved from another location just recently. So nice to have a decent place to chill in the East Dulwich vicinity! It feels more like a café than a bakery, although I believe they do make almost everything on-site and there are definitely some good pastry related eatables here. I had a flapjack and smoothie, both of which were delicious. It’s a chilled out, relaxed vibe and I like the décor. Perfect for a chinwag with a pal on a lazy afternoon.

While I don’t necessarily get the hype of the Blackbird Bakery, this place has a lot to offer the local area. It’s a very cute space and has a wide variety of very posh cake on offer. It’s a nice touch that they have their own roasted coffee and take away granola etc. They’ve got their branding down well and their service is very very good. The staff are always lovely. Still, quite over priced and seems a tad soulless. The best bread I’ve ever had still comes from the community café across the road, Living Water Satisfies. Awesome.

This place is adorable. The salmon salad was lovely and filling and so was my delicious fruit smoothie. They also have a mini shop and I bought their homemade granola, which I’ve had for breakfast the last few mornings and it is sooooo gooood! Oh and the staff are amazing too!

Recently moved a few doors down the road,(used to be on the corner right opposite the station) the new shop is much nicer and bigger and now includes outside seating for the hot days. We get our bread from here all the time, a truly great bakery with well made quality breads to suit a variety of tastes. The pastries are well made and the croissants are the biggest and best I’ve ever tasted, and in my opinion, are worth the trip alone. The service is good, but they can get very busy and run out of all the best food early so make sure you get there early for lunch. The sandwiches are great, using their own bread of course, freshly made and wholesome they make a great lunch, chicken /basil/mayo is my favorite. Throw in a coffee and a croissant(or slice of the excellent Carot cake) and job done! They take orders for cakes if you’d like one for an occasion, and the staff are pretty clued up on the ingredients of everything, so they’ll be able to advise you on any dietary requirements you may have. Usually playing funky music(not so keen on the Jazz FM though) its always clean and pleasant to sit in or take your coffee round the park.

Boy, I really want to like this place. But when I have visitors from out of town, I tell them that Blackbird has great ambience, nice people, and subpar food. Everything I’ve gotten here has been disappointing, so the boy and I stopped going. Then one time I thought, «why not?» and went in anyway. I got the most expensive pain au chcolat in the history of Herne Hill, and it was like day old bread with chocolate in it. The outside was hard, the inside was heavy and dense. Appalled, I told the boy about it that night and got no sympathy from him, for he well remembered the reasons for not going in the first place.

This is the place to tea after pilates. (I feel the other reviews sum up well the cakes and edible trinkets so I will have to do with resuming the tea and atmosphere) The tea serving is brimming. One of those with a huge cup+saucer + pot of hot water+jug of milk+…(wait for it)… a little pot to put your tea bag in which my mum still raves about(«It’s the only place in England I have found one, Elise… The only place in England!») I have seen many yummy mummys bounce into the tiny place with a crying child and the owner will chatter to him or her until it finally stops(this tends to be when he/she eats something on offer). So as narrow and small as this place is, it is buzzing and you do feel yummy sitting on the bistro chairs/carefully selected bench sipping your tea in Herne Hill.

Great bread — don’t bother to go anywhere else. Coffee’s good to. Friendly staff. Just what you need around the corner.

Love their sourdough(they told me the baker learnt his trade in marthas vinyard) but ouch is that expensive bread!

Great place, I wish there was something similar in west dulwich. The coffee needs improving on though, the one I had this morning bore little relation to the real thing.

I love Blackbird bakery, with its various choices of bread(honey and oat is my favourite), although it’s not baked on the premises. The staff are always cheerful and friendly, and the selection of cakes and pastries are very tempting — as is the muesli, honey, and other odds and ends they sell. The bread is a bit expensive, but so much nicer than Sainsbury’s bread — plus you’re supporting a wonderful local business, which also makes amazing coffee, tea and hot chocolate.

Excellent local bakery. I like the fact that they cook different breads on different days. I think their sourdough rye is of the best quality and their quiche are quite simply divine. Their cakes are delicious too. They also sell Brockwell Park honey from time to time which is brilliant if you suffer from hay fever as it allows your body to gain some natural immunity to the different pollen in the area. Have made their nut loaf a number of times and have really enjoyed it. Comes out a bit dry so would recommend having a good gravy with it. I would give it five stars if it opened on a Sunday. Coffee is much better than Pullens in my humble opinion.

Blackbird Bakery makes my cheeks swell with love. The staff here are just such wonderful people. Every time they smile their teeth glow rainbows. It’s so lovely it’s not even human. Their goods are good too. I absolutely love all of their pastries. I can’t choose one as my favourite: they’re all my favourites. I can get a mouthwatering muffin for £2 or a super amazing croissant for £1.50 and be completely happy with either selection. Come here, get a little snack and I assure you you’ll be smiling when you leave.

For organic savoury pastries, croissants, cakes, handmade jams, granola and coffee the Blackbird Bakery will both satisfy and amaze you. The tiny bakery is simple but stylish and well priced, perfect for picking up healthy and tasty snacks as well as fresh loaves of olive, sundried tomato and rye bread and large cakes and tarts to share. For the greatest choice get here early in the day as the delicious food sells like hotcakes. I am always in favour of supporting small businesses, and in my experience the Blackbird Bakery is unanimously the nicest and the best quality bakery in Herne Hill.

From the cute sign out front to the home baked vegetarian dog biscuits, this is a lovely little shop. They sell artisan-type bread, luscious cakes, little quiches and tarts packed with flavour and even their own muesli mix. It ain’t cheap but it sure is tasty, and it’s right opposite the station for grabbing quick nibbles on the way to or from work. It’s open quite late for a bakery which gives it the edge over the others in the area, but towards the end of the day there’s never a lot left — a testament to the quality of the produce I imagine! It’s so nice to have a little independent like this in the area, I vow now to make more of an effort to shop there. You should too!

Lovely baked goods, I dare you to walk to there and not have your mouth watering from the smells and visual temptations
