We had our office party here, so I can’t speak to the normal prices, selection or vibe of the place during a normal night. The 4 stars is really just a comment on the ambience, which I thought was pretty good.

Charming wine bar and great selection. Glad they recently started offering beer, just to cover off groups. Manager is incredibly pleasant and good service. Never had the food.

This place is gorgeous. Hidden in a tiny street around southwark, you wouldnt even find it if you didn’t know it. The outside doesnt look all that special, but when you walk in, the bricks and the little arches really makes you feel like you walked into another world. I wish I took pictures — maybe next Monday. Why next monday, you might ask. Well, because every Monday, during lunch time, they have a special on their pizzas. 5.50 quid for an entire pizza and three toppings of your choice. I chose chorizo, mushrooms, and red onions. It’s not bad for 5.50, but I would be pretty unhappy to pay nearly 9 for it during non-special days. As their name suggests, they have a large selection of wine. Honestly, not a bad place for a romantic cozy evening.

I think one of the first things that has to be said about this bar is DONOT judge a book by it’s cover! Recently went here for work drinks and we were all very impressed. Not only by the exceptionally friendly and attentive staff but also by the décor inside as its very modern(unlike the impression that it gives from the outside of being a bit of a dive!!). What was also great was the table nestled in an alcove which is available for reservation great when there is a large group of you! Had a nibble on the sandwiches which were lovely and fresh! It seems like they do have a dinner menu if you so wish to make a night of it. Shall definitely be back!

Sadly, I’ve wasted many a night here — I nearly made it past to the tube station, but as I rounded the corner from work, there would invariably be a colleague or two standing out the front beckoning me in for the ubiquitous ‘one’. It was run by the charming Terry(a labour of love indeed) who knew all the reglaurs by name and would have your fave poured by the time you sat down. I heard he recently sold up, so I hope the new owners embrace his convivial spirit! They serve good food here, but to be honest I mostly had cheesy chips or bar nuts and crisps before stumbling home. The style is like a French cellar, under the arches of the railway lines it has little tucked away corners and low brick ceilings that you could nearly hit your head on if you don’t watch out. In summer there are usually a few tables outside to enjoy the last of the after-work sun. This is a great friendly local and let’s face it, you want to be where everybody knows your name.

I came across this lovely little place purely by chance — taking a short cut from Tate Modern back to Southwark station. If you choose to walk down the back streets you pass this little wine bar which under the railway arches. They offer an excellent selection of wine and delicious(albeit unhealthy) bar snacks. Wonderful atmosphere and lovely staff — it’s a shame this place isn’t packed out every night. I have been on various occasions when the landlord decided to call it a day before official closing hours. Please try and visit Blackfriars Wine Bar the next time you’re in the area and make it survive the recession!
