So, you’re lost. You’re somehow in Tooting. You’re wandering down the street and you see this lovely clean-looking restaurant called Chicken Shop which has a simple menu and and chickens roasting on spits right when you walk into the door. You order a half chicken, fries, a butter lettuce salad and some cider, and have an excellent 25 pound meal. Worth coming all the way down here for? No, but if you’re close by don’t hesitate; it’s excellent.

Had walked past this shop several times before and always the smells wafting out the windows would make us stop. So today when we were considering where to eat for lunch we decided to finally try it out. BESTDECISION. My boyfriend and I shared a half chicken, along with the butter lettuce and avocado salad, corn on the cob, and a slice of apple pie. All the food was incredible! Both of us had plenty to eat and weren’t so full we felt sick. As if the food wasn’t enough to convince us to want to come back again, the atmosphere was great. The décor is rustic and simple. The kitchen is open and surrounded by a bar where you can watch the chefs work(we opted to sit there and observe… it was mesmerizing). If you are a larger party there are bigger tables in the back too. And their staff were so friendly and conversational. Will definitely be going back!

I’ve been meaning to try this place for a few months. It’s cute inside and nice concept. I just wish they had more on their menu. Chicken wings or a sandwich wouldn’t hurt. It’s purely ¼, 1⁄2 or a whole chicken and then some sides such as fries, corn coleslaw and butter lettuce salad. The menu is very basic. The chicken was nice and felt healthy but isn’t a place I would go out of my way to go to again. The crinkle cut fries where nice but it is hard to ruin fries. I like how they squeezed fresh lemon on the chicken. This place is a bit unusual for an area that is full of indian restaurants so it is nice to have something funky and fun in the area.

If you think Nando’s is crap, but love chicken, this is the place to go. A simple concept executed brilliantly. The chicken is juicy and tender and the sides are just as good. Also try the deep apple pie with ice cream it is yum… I’m no chef, but appreciate good quality food. This is a great place.

Sometimes a place just gets it right. A group of us went to Chicken Shop just before Christmas and initially I was sceptical. I had just been to another chicken shop concept the night before and wasn’t really that impressed by it so I wasn’t expecting much. While we had to wait for 45 minutes for a table, it wasn’t too bad as they took our number and we could head to the nearest pub to wait it out. Once seated, the concept was simple. Did you want chicken… or chicken? Also how much of this said chicken did you want? Once you chose your chicken, you had a selection of about 4 sides. Simple! We went with a group of 7 people, and demolished 3 chickens. When I saw demolished, I mean DEMOLISHED! The chicken was amazing! This is saying a lot as I’m not the type of person to pick the chicken dish off a menu. Chicken is not normally my meat of choice. We also had all the sides(fries, coleslaw, corn, avo salad) and they were simple but done well. The way things should be. We finished up with a slice of the apple pie with ice cream and the chocolate brownie to share between us as we were all pretty full already. Both were perfect. Not to mention when the manager, I think it was the manager(guy with glasses), dished out the pie, he dished out the biggest slice I have ever seen! I hate raving about places, but I’m going to rave about Chicken Shop. The chicken was well seasoned, BBQ’d to perfection(love the smoky, charred flavour) and tender, the sides complimented the chicken and the desserts were just the icing on the cake. It was so good that some of my friends who were doing a pre-Christmas Christmas and were supposed to roast their own chicken considered just coming down and buying a chicken instead! Chicken Shop, — Nailed it!

This place has come up a number of times on Time Out magazine and finally decided to go for chicken instead of the several south asian restaurants in the area. We got there quite early, around 6pm, and first thing you notice are stools all along the fire spit to watch your chicken cook. If you prefer a less entertaining view, there are tables on the back side of the restaurant. Sometimes it is best to have a simple menu. Chicken, a few sides, dessert and drinks. For 2 people, a whole chicken is just about right. They offer you two sauces, hot and some smokey sauce and to be honest the chicken is so well seasoned I didn’t really need any of the sauces. It was really damn good chicken. We ordered a side of fries to share — they were quite good when they’re hot. There were a lot of small pieces towards the end you don’t even bother with. They were okay. As we were sitting at the bar, I saw them prepare the apple pie and luckily I had room for dessert. They brought us nearly a quarter slice of the pie with two scoops of ice cream! It was really, really good. could’ve made it a meal in itself.
