I infrequently organise a group of 20 work colleagues to descend on a Brick Lane curry house and the Clifton never disappoints, its become our favoured choice. Last week was the 4th time Ive done so, although its also often been the choice after our Jack the Ripper walks. Each time the food has been a talking point for days afterwards with many of us trying the vast range that the Clifton offers but which aren’t seen in your local curry house. For something different I tried Chicken Tofa, Grilled Duck Tikka, Grilled Lamb chops, Duck Pasanda and Tandoori mixed grill which a few of us shared. With a host of nan breads, generous rices and a few side dishes including chana massala, saag paneer and bhindi bhaji we were all treated to excellent food with great service. Large and spacious, it serves large parties well, our only complaint being the size of the toilets. I’ve recommend The Clifton to a number of friends and I’ve yet to hear one bad report on the food.

New airy layout, open kitchen, no touts… why isn’t this place highly rated??? I feel a bit weird giving the place five stars in light of the bad previous reviews but I really can’t find any fault with it. In fact it is my current favourite, leaving noisy crammed Tayyab far behind. Clifton is part of the Shampan group — you will see that reviews for Shampan on qype are pretty high. So why would their capabilities be so different here? Second, it is new and renovated and there is an open kitchen so everyone can see how their food is prepared. I think all of this would indicate improvements and adjustments had been made since the previous unpleasant findings. Thirdly, the food was really good and I couldn’t find fault with the service or the prices either. So five stars from me, I hope I won’t «eat my words» on this one: D

The Clifton was on this weeks Rogue Restaurants. It had been shown to be contaminating its food with Ecoli. Recyling food by putting it uncovered in the fridge and then reusing it another day. Canned tomato paste was kept in the tin — overnight and then used the following day. Kitchen staff washed their feet in the sink and blew their noses in the sink where the food plates were washed. Meat was left at kitchen temperature for hours on end and then served up. Avoid at all costs

Clifton is on the corner of Osborne street that leads onto Brick Lane. It has very elegant neutral décor and two floors. The service fast and attentive. The place normally has space even if you have not booked ahead which is a bonus. The food is your standard Bengali/Indian menu with all your favs like Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Karahi etc. The tandoor menu is very good with everything fresh off the grill and sizzling :-) Overall the food is slightly average and the price is decent. Bit more expensive than some of the other places on Brick Lane but nothing compared to some West End restaurant prices.
