El Burrito by Mestizo

This hidden gem was recommended by my Mexican friend who is from the same area as the owner. Ive been in London a year and have not had any proper Mexican food so I was really looking forward to this! The entrance is a bit small and set up for takeout, but if you walk in, there are 3 sets of tables to the right and a few more to the left with bathrooms down the stairs. The lightbulb above our table (the far table in the back on the right) kept turning on and off… so that was a bit weird.
I had three tacos for lunch and YES — they were on point! Delicious soft tacos with well-​cooked meat and proper spices, totally hit all the spots right. They offer a few other toppings and fillings plus classics such as taco salad, quesadilla, enchilada, etc. Dinner times also offer different meat fillings such as chorizo. The guac was a bit too lemony but for 3.50, they sure give you a whole lot! I will be back trying all the others and updating the review.

Returning to an old favourite but as a vegetarian. The staff are lovely as they were in the past. I had the veggie burrito… cooked carrots and mushrooms, did not make for either a taste sensation, nor felt very authentic. Not that I know, having never been to Mexico. Disappointed, may have to seek out one of the other many Mexican choices in the neighbourhood.

My Spanish colleague took me here, along with another colleague who lived in Spain for several years. So that says something.
This is the perfect lunch place. It’s run by all Spanish people and all goes very fast. You first choose the main (most of the people go for the burrito obviously) then the topping/​filling. I had the Chicken Mole with almost all toppings (though did not really notice any chocolate like the menu says, which I think I’m glad for) including the beans, and was not disappointed at all. Chicken was really tender, and the size was perfect for lunch. We all had a Corona beer along with it, as you do at such a place.
They have some basic chairs and tables in the back where you can sit cozy, but when the weather turns better, I’m pretty sure we’re going for the take-​away option to eat outside somewhere.

What a find! I first saw El Burrito back in September when I had dinner across the street, but for some reason, it took all the way until July for Tequila Tuesday to make it here. I arrived and was pleasantly surprised to find several Mexican friends sitting outside eating. You know it’s a good place when you turn up to a Mexican restaurant, and there are Mexicans outside, and the all say, «oh yeah, we love this place!» Score.
I ordered too much food for my friends and I. I ordered: chicken _​_​ (alamades?), chicken mole tamales, a chicken quesadilla, and chicken enchiladas. I do love my chicken, apparently. everything was great, but I wasn’t a huge fan of the quesadilla. It was good, but unlike the enchiladas and tamales, it didn’t taste like the Mexican I know and love from home. It had a much stronger vegetable flavor.
They have a nice selection of tequila, too, as we sampled a couple different shots, and had margaritas as well. The drinks were all great, which is good coming from the Tequila Tuesday crew.
We sat outside, which was frankly amazing, especially as it was pretty sweltering indoors. The guys working said it reminded them of Miami inside the restaurant, but hey, I don’t live in Florida for a reason. The staff was all super friendly, and the owner of Mestizo/​El Burrito was there and shared a drink with us. He was friendly and attentive, before he headed home. We sat around drinking for a while, which was a really nice way to spend the evening.
Oh, and they have horchata. Hard to find that shiz in London! Must go back for it.

great little «hole in a wall» type of place. Very well priced and generally good food. ingredients are fresh, and while not providing for an «unforgettable» dinning experience, for Gbp 5.50 the chicken mole burrito was very, very tasty. I use this place as a takeout so have not spent time in there to sample the atmosphere or drinks. (they have a few tables in the back). would recommend for takeout.

El Burrito is also owned by the same people at Mestizo, which happens to be the place that was recommended to me by a waitress (a stranger) who works at Wahaca.
I had the mole burrito with refried beans, salad, a dash of guac, some salsa and i forget what else and it was good, next time I won’t do a mole burrito but it was solidly good. The price attached to it was also great, cheap, delicious. I would definitely go out of my way for this place.
The staff were really great and it was nice to see some latin flava behind the counter and not some gringos who think that because they’re from the bay area that they are the authority on Mexican food. I’m talking about you Tortilla.
Overall, delicious and good for what it is. Street food!

LOVE El Burrito! Delicious food, great people, wonderful experience.
They also host many fun classes, such as making sugar skulls or pinatas.

Had the vegetarian burrito. Simultaneously light and filling. Only found out afterwards it is an offshoot of Mestizo restaurant, which explains why it was so good. There were two other vegetarian options I want to go back to try.

I’ve been to El Burrito a few times, but it’s not worth going there in my opinion, because Benito’s Hat is around the corner.
El Burrito serves up a pretty authentic burrito, however they are assembled inconsistently, and the last one I had suffered a burrito containment failure of epic proportions. I can eat a well-​prepared burrito with one hand, but I found myself having to scoop out fillings with the supplied tostada chips to try and prevent containment failure. Suffice to say this failed, and I was left with sauce everywhere.
In terms of taste, El Burrito is a little bland. They have some work to do if they want to be top of the burrito league.

Well priced, delicious, authentic Mexican food. The best in town.
For starters, it’s the only joint in town owned and operated by., Mexican’s!
Menu
I’ve been a loyal eater here at least once a week since they opened. The menu selection is genuine and they offer two sizes of burritos — a great idea, sometimes you don’t have room for the big daddy.
Food
I love the Cochinita (pork slow cooked in aciote and orange juice), but will also often opt for the chicken tinga (chicken slow cooked with chipotle, tomato and onions). Another big bonus is that they have proper soft corn tacos. A nice change up sometimes and a true mark of an authentic Mexican restaurant.
Sauces
I always have their guacamole for 50p extra. It’s spicy with a bit of lime. LOVE IT. Their salsa are AMAZING. All homemade and from fresh n’ chunky to hotter than hell.
Drinks
They even have Horchata and tamarindo! Give one a shot sometime.
And…
This restaurant is owned by Mestizo near Euston. Similar food, but with a large tequila menu. A little upscale also awesome. Will post a review of that shortly.

I like Mexican food. I like it a lot. So when a pal suggested we go here for a bit of lunch, then I was rather pleased.
Initially, my heart sank as I arrived as there was a queue out of the door, making me think that this was going to be one of those hellishly busy places that made my head explode.
Alas, this wasn’t the case. El Burrito was busy because, well, the food was cheap enough and very good.
The system is weird however. A man in a cap darts out of the door and issues you with a polystyrene tray (much like the tray you’d get a kebab in) and asks you what you’d like to eat before you’ve even got inside. This is an attempt to speed the whole process up.
However, once he’d written my order on the tray, I found myself repeating it to the people inside anyway, making Cap Man seem a bit superfluous.
That said, this is pretty small-​fry because once I got my food, I wandered into the back and got a seat and got stuck into a gigantic burrito that could’ve fed a football team (granted, a football team of very tiny humans, but you’ve got to play along with analogies like that without taking them at face-​value, okay?).
It is advised that you stock up on napkins however because, unless you’re made out of magic, there’s no way you can plough your way through a burrito without getting it all over you. I’d barely opened mine and I had half a chicken and 40 ladles of guacamole in my hair.
That probably says more about me…
Suffice to say, this is a great little place and worth repeat visits. Next time I’m in the area, I’ll certainly be paying El Burrito a visit.

Was pretty good the first couple of times I ate here. I’m writing this after I just had a burrito there for a 3^rd time and was disappointed. They just didn’t seem to care.
London’s first Chipotle opens up on Charing Cross Road in April. This place needs to shape up fast if they wish to survive.

I’m from California so have had a lot of mexican food, and am generally critical of mexican food in the UK. El Burrito is good for what it is. It reminds me of a hole in the wall taqueria that’s good for no nonsense quick food, as opposed to a fancy sit-​down mexican place.
Their assembly line is like a subway sandwich shop. They have lots of seating with folding metal chairs in the back. We came in around 13:30 and had no problems finding a seat. I had the chicken mole burrito, and it was nice but not something I’m going to keep coming back for. Their burrito construction skills were not that great, and they only had white rice (normally I prefer spanish rice).
The best mexican I’ve found in London so far has been Wahaca, but if you’re in the TCR area looking for a quick bite El Burrito will do just fine.

Good value and great for a quick lunch, despite the queue — took us about 5 minutes to be served.
The burritos themselves were pretty big and really nice, actually — definitely a nice change from Eat/​Pret around the corner.

Une adresse très sympa où on peut commander des burritos à emporter. C’est leur spécialité. On y fait la queue jusqu’à tard dans l’après midi. Il n’y a que deux tables dehors pour manger. Possibilité de faire une affaire pour les «mange-​tard»: il existe un happy hour de 15 à 16h où le plat vous coûte £1 de moins.
On choisit la garniture (porc –cochinita pibil ou al pastor-​, poulet –mole ou grillade-​, ou boeuf-​arrachera), le contenant (taco ou burrito) ainsi que la sauce (peu ou très piquante). On peut choisir la taille du burrito: «baby» (£4−4.50) ou «regular» (£5−5.50) La garniture comprend des haricots noirs, du riz, de la salade, des tomates, des piments jalapeños et de la crème. Comptez 50cts pour un supplément de guacamole. Le résultat était bien consistant, j’aurais toutefois aimé que le mole ait plus de saveur.
C’est assez bien joué pour l’authenticité, puis les serveurs mexicains sont sympas… moins speed que chez «Benito’s Hat» à cinq minutes. Par contre, cette boutique là a l’avantage d’être plus «classe». J’ai aussi aimé le fait qu’ils proposent de l’agua de jamaïca et de tamarin, comme au pays, pour £1.

pretty decent, not spectacular. similar to other reviewers of this place, i recognize that i have a high standard for burritos. that being said, a vaguely burnt and slightly stale tortilla chip is the same whether you are Mex-​pert or not.
chicken mole was actually pretty good, not the insipid crap that sometimes passes for mole. mole has about a bajillion spices, so if it tastes like dishwater than they are doing it wrong (obviously). i like that they have al pastor and they serve it with pineapples, but tossing a few chunks from a plastic bucket on some dry slivers of pork doesn’t really do it for me. i do appreciate that they grill the tortillas.
also, carrots and corn are slightly weird burrito options in my opinion, but points for veggie-​friendly creativity…

I was on my way in to El Burrito last week when I was stopped by an interviewer from the BBC One Show, who asked me on camera if I thought fat girls could be sexy. «Sure, but not as sexy as a fat burrito,» I didn’t answer.
Sadly, my actual boring answer didn’t make me a TV star. El Burrito, however, may make me fat and sexy real soon. While this burrito by no means matches up with the sloppy deliciousness I that I left behind with the Pacific Ocean, it is the closest thing I’ve had here. The meat is not as juicy and flavorful as it could be, and is really the main thing holding this place back. The rest is done pretty well, with the sloppy salsa and the sloppy guacamole providing sufficient sloppiness. Also, they toss on enough jalapenos to give it some of the genuine character that Benito’s Hat is lacking. As a bonus, the folks who work here are super friendly and once gave me two stamps on my free burrito card! This has become my burrito of choice in the neighborhood.
A burrito in which everything is good except the meat is still an incomplete burrito, I’m afraid. But these burritos do have some personality, and personality is what’s really important in the end anyways, right?

Until today I though my relationship with Mexican Food was doomed thanks to the bland, flavourless chilli con carnes and and torillas which plagued my University days. Thanks to El Burrito though i’m all ‘loco’ over their spicy cuisine once again.
My only criticism is the quandry that their menu puts you in with Burritos, Tacos & Quesedillas all on offer with a mouthwatering variety of fillings. Today I opted for Quesedilla filled with Cochinita (melt in your mouth pork cooked in a sauce of achiote and orange juice) which really hit the spot with intense flavour and juicy tomatoes. Next time I will be taking the plunge and devouring a Chicken Mole which uses Mexicos most famous sauce consisting of 20 ingredients (even chocolate).
All I was missing was an ice cold cervesa but hey, thats the pitfall of the working lunch.

If the line to get in to this place doesn’t state how good it is, I don’t not what! Burritos, just for the sake of clarification, are a staple of the North of Mexico, where they eat flour tortillas. The burritos we see here in London are a Tex– Mex version, with the cream, and cheese., Ok now that we got that out of the way. I love burritos, and around this area there are so many establishments dedicated to this dish that I had to test them and find the best burrito. This restaurant is up there, fresh ingredients, perfectly seasoned meat and lovely spicy salsa. The search is on!

Yep, another burrito place. God this town is full of them. but here’s the thing, this one is pretty damn good. i mean, it’s completely souless, but the food is damn good.
I’m impressed — decent sized burritos, without being watery and fatty so gunk goes everywhere. They don’t overfill them which is important, I think. As stupid as it sounds. Plus, you get cutlery, which you don’t get at the mexican stall at the food market over the road.
I really like it here. I really like being able to sit outside and watch posh people in Charlotte Place. I like only paying £5 for my lunch (although, don’t charge me extra for gaucamole, that’s taking the piss — it’s a burrito for goodness sake).
I don’t like the nachos that were nothing else but dull Dorritos (in fact, I’d rather they’d serve dorritos’), and I’d really like a smile behind that counter — we didn’t want to stay inside really. It was frosty.
Better than Benitos hat? No. Yummy? Yes.

This place is fantastic! We went for a team meal here having failed to get a seat for us 5 at Benitos Hat and we were not disappointed!
Generous portions for both nachos and burritos left us all absolutely stuffed. The food is yummy, the speed of service is fast and they make it just the way you want it.
I would highly recomend going here early though — when we left at 1:30pm there was a huge queue!
