I brought a friend here on a rainy day and had a very relaxing evening. The place is spacious and laid back with large sofas and wooden tables. Our server was attentive and kept checking on us. We started with some herbal tea, then ordered dinner. I had a huge portobello mushroom burger with fries. It was so tall that it looked impossible to eat without dislocating my jaw! The buns were fluffy, the mushroom was well-flavored and melted cheese with veggies blended well with the rest of the burger. My friend tried an impressive looking bangers and mash. I preferred gastro-pub food than traditional pub food here. I also saw pizza and pasta on the menu, so I’ll tackle them next time… This place will be a new go-to place in my neighborhood.

This place is great for any day of the week whether it be for food or drinks. Great atmosphere, friendly staff who are very attentive. Reasonable priced and generally relaxed.

Half pub, half gastro-pub, half locals’ favourite, half empty most of the time. I know that’s a lot of halves. But I’ve been here a number of times, and it’s had completely different feel to it each time. The food is usually very good, except on the rare occasion this place is busy, then it seems to fall apart a little. But come here when it’s quiet and you’ll get attentive service(in a pub — I know) and care put into your food. It’s a big old place, which can make it feel deserted on quiet nights. Great quiz though. Hmmm… I’m not sure.

Quick visit on a wednesday lunch time, service fine surprised that food was really decent, great ham hock terrine & good portions. Only minor niggle was the beer was slightly cloudy. Not a bad gastro styled pub

The classic complaint about eatin’ and drinkin ’ in The Big Smoke is that we have to overpay for mediocrity. This place is, arguably, a case in point. I’ll admit I’m not a regular visitor, but I go past most weekends, and it always seems busy in here. On the evidence of my(infrequent) visits, I can’t for the life of me see why. The last occasion I stopped in was a Sunday afternoon– I was looking for a quiet place to have a drink and catch up with an old friend. We were both feeling, err, somewhat jaded, after a busy weekend. First drink was the weary man’s standby, the pint of Coke. Pints of(pump) Coke, shouldn’t take fifteen minutes to come from behing the not-serving-anyone-else bar. Nor should they come in a chipped glass of dubious cleanliness. Nor, indeed, should they cost £3.50 each. Enough said I shan’t be back.

When the manager agrees the food’s not good enough, you should get a refund. Service was dire, even though the place was almost empty, and the steak meal that’s advertised above and on their website as being £30, was £35. When I complained that the chips were not chips but sloppy slices of potato that wobbled when touchd and oozed brown grease(ie inedible), the manager offered me a pudding. I didn’t want a pudding, I wanted a refund, if not on the steak, at least on some of the cost, especially as they’d misrepresented it on their website! I settled for a free(cheap) whisky, which came in a filthy glass. Which was chipped. Not the only filthy glass by the way. The manager was friendly, but completely inadequate either for his job, or for making reparations when everything’s gone wrong. Won’t be going back there this lifetime.

The Elephant on the Hill has recently changed hands and things have got a lot better. This is a venue with a good choice of beer and a decent menu. It is half way between gastro-pub and normal pub food. The staff are very keen to serve and will provide a drinks service. For the summer 2011 they are advertising a barbecue on the patio from«finish work on Friday, all weekend». I havent tried it yet but will do so soon.

Had a fantastic grilled(outside) salmon and asparagus two weeks ago and a pretty good Portobello Mushroom, Aubergine & Halloumi Burger yesterday eve. Staff is great and atmosphere when the front windows are all open is pleasant for eating and reading. The bitter was local and they seem to pride themselves on a well selected british foods menu despite the somewhat shotgun approach to a wine and beer list. Its my 4th or 5th time here in the past 3mos so that says something.

As a regular customer since this place changed management I can certainly say that it has improved immensely. Friendly staff, nice decour, often table service if it’s not too busy & decent food too! There’s rarely a big sporting crowd in so the music & atmosphere makes it a nice place to spend time in. Though they will show sport if you request it. All in all my favourite pub in the clapham junction area.
