History
Established in 2005.
Emmaus (pronounced ee-may-us) supports formerly homeless people by giving them a home, meaningful work in a social enterprise and an opportunity to get back on their feet.
For many people who experience homelessness, one of the biggest obstacles they must overcome is a loss of self-esteem. Emmaus provides people with a stable home and an opportunity to regain their self-worth, making a real contribution to their community.

Companion At Emmaus Lambeth
In 2008, when the financial world melted down, my world melted down too.
I had moved to the UK from Germany four years previously, working full time as a head chef, a job that I enjoyed. After a while I switched positions to restaurant work and found it wasn’t for me. I wasn’t worried though, I thought I’d just move to London and find a new cheffing job. How wrong I was. It was literally the worst timing.
It was nearly a year later when I read about Emmaus in Pavement, the magazine for homeless people. I tried phoning, but didn’t get through, so I walked across London to get to Lambeth, turning up on the doorstep. They accepted me, and two days later I had a room. What a feeling!
In the next few months, my life is set to change again. Soon I will be able to help other people who were in my position as they come to Emmaus, as I start work as a community support worker.
