A real boxing gym in London! A bit out of the way if you’re not in South London, being in Lambeth. The gym has plenty of punching bags, a couple speed bags, even a couple treadmills. Though I bring my own gear, seems like the gym provides everything from gloves to headgear for sparring. This is a true boxing gym, not one of those city boy weekend warrior«boxing» gyms that charges outrageous start up fees and monthly rates. It’s 3 pound a go, with no membership fees(unless you want to use it on Sat). Ahhh… the smell of sweat and leather.

As part of an early new year’s resolution, I decided to start boxing training. I found this place through a session of googling and went down to their open training night on Fridays(this is from 4−8pm). Having not boxed before I walked in and was helped out straight away by one of the volunteers who work there. They are very helpful there and offer you advice from their many years of boxing. The gym itself is proper old school with a few weight machine, a ring, and lots of heavy bags. I go every week now more to keep fit and learn a few boxing moves rather than anything serious, but it is a friendly club and worth visiting as its very near waterloo station.

Great club this, I get to spar a fair bit and get some great coaching even with my ham fists. It’s a snip a £3 a time(sometimes that’s for a 4 hour session if you can take it), and it’s one of the few places left without a lycra-clad ‘boxfit’ vibe. The evening sessions(Tuesday and Friday) are generally busy, while the Saturday session is packed out, so if you can make it go during one of the other weekdays, 9:30 till 2:30. The equipment’s pretty comprehensive as well.
