Hope my readers are not spies or I will be in trouble! BUT for all aspiring James Bonds. It is already well known that a large network of tunnels exists below London for a variety of communications, civil defence and military purposes. It is much less clear how these tunnels, and the various facilities linked to them, fit together, if at all. Even the number and nature of these facilities is unclear; only a few have been officially admitted to. maybe still used. (see, for instance, War Plan UK by Duncan Campbell or Beneath the City Streets by Peter Laurie). Also good is spotting derelict tube stations when bored on the underground. Access to the tunnel is gained via an 8 ft(2.4 m) lateral tunnel and a lift shaft in the nearby Whitehall telephone exchange in Craig’s Court. Indeed, it is here where you’ll find the real entrance to the government’s tunnel network in an unassuming building in Craig’s Court just off Trafalgar Square. Built to protect communication cables during World War II, the tunnels are around 100 feet below ground and pass from Nelson’s Column, to the Houses of Parliament and beyond, even passing under 10 Downing Street where you’ll find a lift into the PM’s! Real Bond movie stuff! No photo’s either :0))
