Greenwich Clocktower Market

The best of the remaining Greenwich markets retains a little of the atmosphere that used to make Sundays in Greenwich so wonderful. This is a very small market and can get hair tearingly busy at times. But, the stalls can be good places to find some decent vintage stuff. It’s just a shame that this is really all that’s left of the Greenwich markets which were so popular with locals and tourists alike in the pre Greenwich theme park days.

I bought the nicest painting for only 5 pounds, took it home, and framed it at a local framing store. It now looks like it was painted by a professional. It’s the centerpiece when you enter my home. Whenever I pass it I remember the awesome London vacation. Greenwich was a beautiful day trip.

Came here by accident after heading back from the main market and must say I actually found this preferable to my interests. Its small, but that just means you can give the individual stalls more attention. I have been to big vintage and antique fairs before and they can become such a slog!
Full of mainly second hand, antique and vintage goods I pretty much saw something I wanted to buy on every stall. from Taxidermy to antiquarian prints. I eventually bought a vintage headscarf for £2.00 and a 1940s first aid kit, complete with all its original belongings including a rather fetching eye patch!
My friend bought a 1930’s beautiful enamel cooking pot in immaculate condition. The woman who ran the stall was very knowledgeable telling us its history and how to care for the item.
Will certainly be going back.

The clock tower market has really come into its own over the last few years. But this isn’t necessarily a good thing. It’s doing well because the main outdoor market was closed down, and the stall vendors have either moved here, or to another market in London. Brick Lane is picking up a lot of them.
Until a year ago, I wouldn’t even bother walking around this place, it just wasn’t worth the time. And then something happened. I’d go by on the bus and see a few vintage handbags out of the window, I’d spy some decent china instead of the rubbish that used to be there, and before I knew it I was being hidden be four market girls while I undressed in the middle of Greenwich to try on a vintage ball gown. I didn’t buy it. And it was cold.
I popped there at the weekend to help a male friend do some shopping, everyone was friendly, the stock was good and we left with very excellent bargains. There will always be something about a free bowtie that will brighten your day.
If you’ve ever strolled by and thought there wasn’t much here, do take another look. It might not get the same attention as the indoor market, but the guys here stock some good stuff.

Every Saturday and Sunday, loads of stuff from £2 grab boxes full of stuff (I got a totally decent pair of cufflinks for £4…) to properly sorted vintage clothes. There’s even a bit of stuff for blokes, and at reasonable prices, too.
Worth a trip out every now and then– it’s a bit hit or miss, as these things always are, but it’s off the beaten track enough that you’re likely to find some nice stuff.
