I keep forgetting that the Grocer On Elgin is more than a shop, I’ve never actually even had a coffee here. But I’ve had a lot of tasty sandwiches and salads, and I love their breads. They often win against Mr Christian’s across the road simply for keeping their doors open later. I remember venturing to the back of the shop when it first opened ages but it somehow doesn’t appeal to me, all a bit too dark — and rather deserted during the week; I am sure they are buzzing with tourists at weekends. So I stick to the front and lunchtime treats to take away. It’s all a bit on the dear side, definitely catering for the yummy mummy fraction in the neighbourhood.

delicious, artisan meals to-go for a busy, hungry Notting Hiller and guest(me). braised rabbit, guinea fowl tagine, herbed couscous and tahitian vanilla creamed rice? wrap it up please.

For pre made food you can’t beat this place. Everything is delicious. From sheperd’s pie to soup to mac and cheese, roasted vegetables, and so many other yummy things. Some items that are traditionally child-friendly(mac and cheese and sheperds pie), are a bit too spicy for little ones. But the big children(meaning the adults!) will love everything.

Best coffee in Notting Hill — better even than Tea & Coffee Plant, though not cheaper! Their flat white is part of my staple diet and their pizza slices make a great hasty lunch. There is also a great selection of pre-prepared meals, groceries and cakes and pastries — all at a(high) price. My only criticism is that service can be a bit slow, although it has improved a lot recently.

I really like the grocer on elgin. They do a great job with all of their deli salads. I love the chicken remoulade salad, and the lentil salad is great as well. They once had a kedgeree salad that was amazing, but disappointingly I never saw it again! They also offer a range of cheeses and other specialty foods.

The Crocer on Elgin, is actually not just a crocer, it is a super deli where you can do your shoppings with style. Well jokes aside, the treats really are high quality and this is the place to get«the sauce» to save your dinner parties. Everything is «homemade» but still this is not the deli with safe and well known options, no no, they use imagination and with a great success. My favorite part is the bread selection, especially their chipatta that is just so rich and soft. Perfect. So naturally my top one treats are also the stuffed sadwitches, made from the very same bread. The veggie version with artisokes and marinated olives is hads up the best sadwitch I have had.

It’s a shame The Grocer on Elgin isn’t cheaper — I’d be in there every day picking out what to «make» for dinner(the reheatable packaged meals are boldly flavoured — in any cuisine — and delicious). Instead, I usually pop in for a completely gratuitous treat along the lines of a pain au chocolat or a meringue the size of my head. It’s a pleasure just to wander about the shop — the sleek black and wood interior with shelves full of mouthwatering delicacies is beautiful. They also recently added a little restaurant downstairs which serves pretty decent brunch-y food but lacks any atmosphere(white basement, no windows).

This is my lunchtime staple. Great food, great ingedients. So consistent. I usually go for either the giant couscous and hallumi salad or the grilled salmon. my tip is to always check the dates so that you get the freshest salad on offer. And don’t show up before noon becuase it seems that the days’ salads etc, made off site, don’t arrive until around then. Of course they also have wonderful vacuum-packed dishes for trinking your guests into thinking you’ve been cooking all day.

I think all these ‘The Grocer…’ feel pretty much the same. They seem to stock the same products and the food always looks and tastes great. Last time I was in this particular Grocer I took the bold step of going for the pizza instead of the chicken and roasted vegetable sandwich I usually go for. It was the artichoke one and was really good, got better as you went along actually especially the thicker, cheesier bit in the middle. They also have loads of chilled options for expensive but ultra convenient and ultra cool prepare at home stuff. The fruits in compote and the like are great as are the pasta options. I’m not a huge fan of sweet stuff but they also specialise in some amazing looking cakes, meringues and biscuits. If that’s your bag head down to Elgin and get a selection put in one immediately.

The grocer has excellent(if expensive) sandwiches and pastries for a takeaway lunch. I must admit that I have not tried their cook at home meals. However the reason I give this place 5 stars is the fact that they sell Tim Tams, Mint Slices and BBQ shapes. If you are Australian you will know what I am talking about = fantastic.

The Grocer On Elgin is a brilliant concept by food lovers for food lovers. This is basically a traiteur with really good prepared courses, mainly of French and Italian inspiration, freshly prepared, packed and ready to be consumed within a few days. A bit like going to your local gastropub and getting that fresh Boeuf bourguignon, mediterranean chicken, moroccan meatballs or asparagus and peas risotto straight from your fridge to your plate after a few minutes in the microwave. We buy quite a lot and keep it in the fridge for those evenings when we don’t want to cook. Way better than any prepared frozen meals from the Waitrose, M&S & Co. and probably more expensive too(while a couple of years ago most packs were £4−5 each they tend to be £6−7 these days). They could change the meals more often but generally there is a good diversity. Worth trying if you want to eat well at home and don’t have the time to cook. The place has been well-designed too so a visit just to take a look is worth doing.
