Desperately in need of a new place to call my ‘local curry’ after my old place let me down I decided to try this one out. The interior is like most Indian restaurants; an abundance of white table cloth and napkins. The service is pretty good, though they can be a bit quick taking down your order and when they get busy you really have to stay on top of your waiter or you risk getting forgotten or having the order wrong(it has happened on all three occasions I’ve been there, but they’ve been very quick to correct). The food is above average for what I’ve experienced elsewhere and you don’t have to wait long for the food to arrive. Finally, I have an Indian restaurant again that I can call my own ‘local’ :)

An area and a road choc full of decent Indian restaurants. From the slightly posh Zing to the dead cheap Sagar and a good 20 in between. Haweli is another decent effort. Admittedly me and the missus have a slightly softer spot for it as its sister restaurant in Ealing was one of our first dates many moons ago. And me and my mate Stu would often bang down the door there at 2am with them only too happy(yeah right) to knock us something up. So, fond memories of what I would describe as a typically good local curry house. We wandered into the Hammersmith branch for old time’s sake the other day. We noticed it had been spruced up somewhat. The furnishings are comfier and a little smarter. And they’ve added ‘haute cuisine’ to their name which frankly is a bit of a worry. What could also set the alarm bells ringing are the two luminous orange signs in the window declaring their sunday buffet. It gives the place a slightly NCP feel which I’m guessing they don’t really want. Other than that, happy to report, the welcome is just as friendly, the menu as reassuring and the Cobra as cool. Sure, they’ve added a bit of panache. I ordered a green tandoori chicken sizzling thing which was slightly different from the normal tandoori offering. In fact it didn’t quite work for me. A little dry ad the coriander marinade giving it a slightly odd look, but tasty enough. Prawn puri was delicately spiced and generous and the puri bit was lovely and puffed. Our other main I must confess we can’t remember how they described it. But it was a generous portion of chicken breast meet and a very good creamy sauce which we mopped up with excellent naan, puffy and slightly burnished, just as it should be. All in all a great example of a good old local curry house in an area full of hot competition. It continues to thrive for those who like the friendly service, the familiar menu and the comfy surroundings. And the After Eights with the bill.

‘Haweli’ in Hammersmith has become my top choice of the Indian restaurants that deliver to Chiswick. My three favourite local Indians remain ‘Haweli’, ‘Annapurna’ and ‘Jubraj’. This place is up there with the very best and I have experience of many Indian outlets in my area and beyond. Places such as: Agni The Bombay Bicycle Club The Holy Cow Tiffin Box Himalayan Spice Grove Park Tandoori Shilpa Tiffin & Fresco Taste of Raj Deliverance Red Onion Green Chilli Anarkali They do a decent Madras, an excellent Sag Lamb and the Tarka Dal, Pilau Rice & breads are of a similar high standard. The Chicken Tikka(of the bone) was a little dry compared to some but still delicately spiced. The Tandoori chicken leg was slightly superior. The Lamb Pasanda is great — the best I have tried in recent memory, although a female companion insisted it was not as authentic as others we have shared as it was slightly too spicy hot AND lacked the delicate almond undertones. At any rate the correct cut of lamb was used and if I am eating alone I will not bother with anywhere else’s version of the dish! The Service is friendly but the heavily accented guy who answered the phone had a hard time getting my address details correct more than once! However the delivery driver has always found the place OK. HIGHLYRECOMMENDED!

Above par curry house. I’ve spent many a good night at this place with my previous work colleagues. Good grub and very good service. King Street has many restaurants but this is definitely one of the better ones.
