Kings College Dental Hospital

I was referred here by my dentist for wisdom tooth extraction. It was a long time before I received a letter with an appointment date and time (which could be changed on calling them, but I didn’t need to), but apparently it takes up to 6 weeks for them to contact you after a dentist referral. My letter was followed by an automated voice message to my phone a few days before — reminding me of my appointment and asking me to confirm that I would be there. On the day the waiting time was minimal, the staff friendly and really put me at ease. I had an Xray (you have to remove all jewellery around the area — earrings, necklace etc, however I have a lip ring that I have never removed and they just worked around it).
They provided an easy to understand analysis of my wisdom tooth situation, and the procedure I would need to go through, and said I would probably need another, 3d, xray scan to know how the tooth sits, before the surgery. A few days later I received my letter asking me to book my 3d scan appointment, which I did, and I arrived on the day and went straight in for the scan. Again, I could not remove my lip ring, and neither could the scanning staff, so they worked around it and it was fine.
I am currently waiting for my letter to book the surgery itself. My rating will perhaps change after that!
Pros: Friendly, helpful staff, efficient appointments (minimal wait!)
Cons: Having to wait for letters to be able to schedule appointments — it creates a delay and a phone or an online system would be much easier! Scanning staff not being able to help me remove my lip ring haha.

Hello, I wanted to write a review as the rules of emergency dental appointments are very vague. I had killer toothache, the kind that keeps you up all night and unable to eat it was the worst pain ever and now I can sympathize with everyone out there experiencing the same problems. My first try on the Friday was to an NHS emergency dental walk in clinic, which I assumed they would fix the problem but they just put a dressing over my tooth, told me to keep taking painkillers and sent me on my way to find a real dentist. The problem was my registered dentist was in Scotland and I didnt have the time to go up and visit. So I spent the weekend in total agony (there are no emergency, emergency dental hospitals on the weekends you would have to go to A&E) and I google searched everything on the internet to find emergency care etc and eventually Kings College came up. The registration starts at 8am and appointments start at 8.30am, I got there at 7.55am and there was already 10 people in front of me, but its not about the queue, its about how fast you fill in the form! First one to hand the form in, goes. I think I was 4^th but they call the first 5 people at the same time and take you through to a giant room divided into 5 sections where you can whine about your issues and list your symptoms etc. you then get sent on to x-​ray if needed or you wait for the dentist to see you. The thing that I must emphasise here is that they do not do procedures (fillings, root canals etc) they will only take the pain away and send you to find a normal dentist. The only thing they can do is pull a tooth out, which is what I opted for as I was in so much pain, I wanted it to stop now and I didn’t care anymore. The staff were very friendly, understanding and try to see everyone, its a handy place if your in severe pain but the moral of the story is no matter where you go for emergency dental treatment (NHS) none of them will fix it for you, they just calm down the pain until you get a dentist.
Its a bit of a stupid system, I think emergency dental should be treated like any other hospital and patients should have access to getting the treatment done there and then but clearly the have not progressed on this plan.

Large busy hospital employs over 6000 staff, deals with most major traumas and incidents!

A huge behemoth of a hospital, whatever you have broken they can fix it!
From a residential patients perspective, each bed has a tv that you have to pay for that is both expensive and unreliable. They have pay for wifi in some places and we found it quite fast although they were having problems on the day we were using it. You are allowed to plug your own gadgets into the mains but they have to put it through a free electrical «PAT» check first.
They have a costa coffee shop but the coffee was scalding hot and tasteless.
Being such a big sprawling place in an urban enviorment it does have security issues so take the usual precautions and if you are cycling there take more locks than harry houndni.
that all said for the most part the staff are excellent and we have come home with a happy healthly baby and you can’t say better than that.

I have never got why people get scared about going to the dentist.
From the age of three I used to go to Kings College Dental Hospital. Initially, slightly shy about letting a stranger look into my mouth (I am told) my parents would bring me here while Dr Smith a very amiable and calm dentist would count my teeth, give me a sticker and off I went home. I doubt this is common practice but it worked for me and since I have never had a problem with going to the dentist.
The hospital deals in paediatric, orthodontic and specialist dentistry. It is run by the NHS so advanced booking is necessary and the time in the waiting room is by no standards brief, but the dentists here were always fantastic throughout the many years I was a patient here for.
Excellent with children, excellent in what they do and thankfully I have not had a single problem with my teeth since.
