London Metropolitan University

London Met gets a bad rap.
Yeah it’s got a community college feel. Yeah there are some very uninspired students here. Yeah the faculty is questionable. Yeah their primary color is purple.
But hey! If you’re lookin to kick back and drink in that degree, London Met is the place for you! Who knows if your teacher will show up on time or if your module will get canceled after it already starts? That’s where the all the fun is!
The North campus has that urban, not-​so-​polished feel. You can drink a few pints at Retro across the street and show up to class drunk and no one would know the difference! You can’t get that at Oxford!
As a London Met student who is abroad (originally from the University of Maryland), I love how chill everything is here. It has a very mellow vibe and the classes don’t give too much work or care if you attend all the time.
Your classes will have a mixed bag of students. Hey look, there’s an 80 year old! And a middle aged mother! And a cheerleader! And a pothead! You’ve got it all at London Met!

When first coming into the North Campus of London Metropolitan University… I was so confused. This building to say the least is insane and quite difficult to get used to in the sense that you get lost extremely easily. All in all though, London Met is a pretty good school for students. They get the education that they need to and it really focuses on the students and since they start going to school together from the beginning everyone knows each other and their school friends become some of their closest friends. It’s a different environment from that in America since it focuses mostly on the major instead of the General Education, but all in all it’s a good school and you’ll get what you need from it.

Ok so I don’t go here, but I stayed with my friend in his student accommodations flat for a week and the one thing I learned about London Met is… (drum roll please…)…
THE KIDS HERE KNOW HOW TO PARTY.

I suppose I cant entirely blame the fact that I haven’t found a job after graduating on London Metropolitan University. going to find my inner self in South America probably didn’t help and apparently there is some sort of financial crisis going on.
It wasn’t all bad but I didn’t know many students that were particularly enthused about the teachers, the facilities or the courses they were taking. For humanities at least, apparently for sports (not really my thing) the met is much better.
The fact that they will basically let anyone in is probably the biggest issue. I am all for equal opportunities but I think a requirement of studying degree level English is that you should be able to speak English, at least a bit. Although one of my English teachers fell asleep in every class without fail so it didn’t really matter that much anyway.
My fondest memories of university are of the times I spent in the student union and the student union in both campuses is pretty rubbish. I will say though, that if Amanda Sakur is still there, it is worth looking into International relations as she is a fantastic professor.

The unavoidable economic recession is looming ahead of us and unfortunately some of us may lose our jobs. January is also the time that people reflect on their lives and plan to make changes. If you are thinking of a career change and you want or need to boast your qualifications, have a think about London Metropolitan University.
The university has a policy of encouraging mature students to apply with relevant work experience who may be lacking conventional qualifications. For many out there who are beyond their teens or twenties it is daunting thinking of going back into education. Don’t despair because the university has more mature students than teenagers. The university has a massive array of courses both full and part time with excellent facilities.
If there was ever a time to make a change in your career it is now and London Met could be a step in the right direction. Sports and science related degrees are especially good. For those not wanting a degree there are many short and vocational courses to.

The Orion building in Holloway Road should be on everyone’s must see list. Designed by Daniel Liebskind, the architect who created the Jewish museum in Berlin and is rebuilding the World Trade Center in New York, this is a piece of magnificent architecture, that few know about. Everyone raves about the the Guggenheim museum, but this unexpected functional and exciting building is so often overlooked. Go see.
