I went to a workshop in the area and was looking for somewhere for dinner afterwards with some friends. L’Ulivo was agreeable to us all so we went in. I hadn’t seen said friends in a couple of months and I can only assume I so engrossed in catching up that I didin’t really take in the surroundings. For some reason I got it into me head that the décor was kind of traditional italian restaurant with dated 80s décor. It’s the kind the décor the feels kind of homely and comforting, a bit like being to a traditional pub. Anyway, the place wasn’t very busy. Quite surprising for Baker Street, it being a touristy area. Our waitress was confident and capable. I ordered the vegetarian calzone. It’s a novelty to find places that do vegetarian calzones outside Italy, so I always jump at the opportunity to have one when I come across it. When the food arrived the calzone was enormous! And looked very appetizing. The tomato sauce that accompanied it was delicious! However, when I cut into it I realised alot of that was just pizza dough. Once I got to the filling it was tasty and hearty, no gastronomic masterpiece, this is calzone afterall, but tasty. One of my friends only eats gluten-free food and I was quite impressed with the meal she was presented with. She order salmon in a ginger sauce with asparagus. It was was the best gluten-free meal I’ve ever seen her presented with, normally they tend to look really dry. She admitted that the food was good. Oh! I digress on the point of décor. During the meal I looked up and realised the décor wasn’t dated at all. It was actually quite contemporary, but I think it was the colour that created the illusion for me, all dark browns and wines. Although, there was something kind of plasticky and cheap about it. The bathrooms are downstairs and the lights are motion activated and on a short-timer it would appear. It was unnerving stepping down into the darkness until the lights came on and even more so to come out of the cubicle to find the lights off. So, heads-up on that one. The place is obviously aimed at tourists. There’s a rack of leaflets on London attractions by the stairs. Pleasant but forgettable.
