Monmouth Coffee

I had an amazingly smooth latte and nice conversation with one of the baristas about the types of beans they roasted. Everyone talked about the long queues but I went on a Monday morning around 10 am and there was no one waiting although all the seats were taken up by other customers). I ended up buying some beans and the barista even offered to brew me a sample to try to make sure I liked the flavor of the coffee. This place is definitely a place to try when visiting London.

There’s no need to repeat what’s already been said 250 times before me.
I’ll just take my cup of heaven in exchange for 5 stars and be on my way…

Hooray! Monmouth is London’s most famous best coffee. There are several locations all around the city, but one of the larger ones that actually does have seating is this one, right near Borough Market. There is a long line, but it separates into people getting drinks and people just buying beans, and it goes pretty quickly. There are many baked goods, but they are past the line, so if you’re hungry be sure not to miss them. The coffee was made beautifully, and the baristas obviously know their stuff. While waiting on the line, guests are given packets of information about the different beans available and when it got really long were given free samples of coffee.

Best coffee in London and just a magical spot nestled in the heart of the Borough. Buy some flowers, prosciutto, and walk over to Monmouth to fully stimulate your senses. I look forward to coming to Monmouth every time I visit the Borough. It’s a lovely experience at best.

Definitely as good as it gets in the London coffee scene. And the locals know it! This spot was packed midday, but don’t get discouraged — the line moves quickly.
If you want beans, go toward the right side. The woman working here was super helpful in helping me pick beans to bring back to my friend. There were over 10 varieties! (They’ll grind the beans for you if you want.)
The drip coffee is super smooth and gave me just the right amount of jolt. It has the perfect balance of sweetness naturally.

Got a perfectly made latte from here. Was recommended this place by a friend I was with and it did not disappoint! The shop was spacious with views of Borough Market. One of the best coffee’s I had in London.

Blown away by their whole concept of serving really really good quality coffee with something to nibble on a community table. I think the lines outside are testament to how good their coffee is. Their expresso drinks are obviously amazing, but try their filter coffee, it’s something so unique and of course it tastes amazing. We were visiting London, so on conversion the prices seemed a bit steep, but totally worth it. Loved this place and tried a get a cuppa from here everyday.

Every once in awhile it’s great to treat yourself with a Monmouth coffee. On a Saturday, the line runs around the corner. The upside is they have a person going thru the line and taking your order. By the time you get to the cashier, your coffee is hot and ready!
If you sit inside, you can pay $ 4 a person to pair some bread and jam with your drink.
Definitely recommend and worth a try next time you’re walking around borough market.

They also sell their single origin beans, grinding them (or not) to your specifications. If you’re around Borough Market early, grab a Ginger-​Pig-​bacon and egg sandwich from Roast to Go, get your coffee at Monmouth and be happiest, most London person ever.

Had the most delicious, smooth cappuccino here. Finally understand what the hype is all about. Yes, the coffee is divine — it had a strange soothing effect on me after a long day out and about. If I didn’t know better, I would say it had medicinal properties! ;)
I was lucky enough to snag a seat and didn’t have to wait in a long line to get my fill of the beans. This was on a Wednesday afternoon around 4 pm… so I would say odd hours work best if you want to sample their brew without a struggle.

Had a coffee after lunch on reccomendation. Ordered a flat white as always a decent test of a coffee shop. Friend had a latte.
Well the flat white was identical to the latte… Milk in both was not hot enough and not stretched enough in the FW. It seems that is an all too common occurrence these days.
Beans were the beans of the day which were fresh, not bitter… Pretty nice actually.
Three stars because it was better than most but I won’t be returning.

This is great little café but you will battle locals and tourists for a place to sit as it is small, but very quaint with excellent atmosphere.
We had a latte and a regular coffee and both were great! Excellent taste and body.
The café is across the street from the borough market, a great market that if you are in London for more than a few days should really visit after you get the big attractions off the list.

I was recommended this coffee shop by a Londoner and while I spent a month in Italy and France, the coffee culture is not the same as the one I’m used to from New York — well-​sourced, single origin roasts prepared excellently. One could say that it’s a bit pretentious compared to the relatively straightforward execution of France and Italy, but to me it’s just like craft beer culture; it’s just another thing that you can understand.
That being said, I really liked Monmouth Coffee — it felt like I was at a coffee shop in Brooklyn. They have an excellent selection of beans and their drinks are expertly crafted (cool latte art too). Their espresso blend was very flavorful and rich, even with the milk in the iced latte.
I definitely recommend grabbing a cup of coffee here while you peruse the stalls of Borough Market.

Early on a Saturday morning, before most shops are open, Monmouth Coffee is buzzing. The queue can stretch on, spilling out into the street. But this shouldn’t come as a surprise, because Monmouth’s coffee is well worth the wait.
Beans are carefully chosen and roasted. Then, each order is prepared with the same attention to detail. After a work week filled with mass market cups of coffee, the difference of a Monmouth cup is noticeable.
If it’s before 8, people will congregate, sip their coffee and enjoy one of the many fresh pastries in anticipation of Borough Market’s open. Space is limited, making it nearly impossible to find a seat, especially later in the day. You don’t need to sit, though, to appreciate a good, strong coffee — and Monmouth’s is the best London has to offer.

As I always tell my coffee loving friend, I’m an infidel who only likes white coffee with sugar. On a lunch meet in borough market he needed to buy some more coffee from Monmouth and took me along for the fun of it.
As we got there the queue for coffee was huge and I now know why. The staff were amazingly friendly and helpful and all round nice people. The coffee is bagged and ground to order and the staff are happy to give you tasters and advice on what you might like though be wary, my friend ended up tasting 5 espressos once and ended up in a crazy caffeine high for the rest of the day!
He had Kenyan black and me, cappacino of course but he did persuade me to taste his and… I loved it, fruity, light and the perfect temp as it’s filtered one cup at a time in a ceramic thingy. My cappacino was also amazing! I was already going off the coffee at work but this sealed the deal. Will be joining that queue with all the other happy Monmouthers waiting patiently for our perfectly made, fair trade coffees. Yum!

You know that moment when you need an amazing cup of coffee and someone hands you that perfect cup of coffee and it is the best moment in your entire life in the entire world.
That moment. Right there?

Monmouth Coffee is easily one of the best cup of coffees in London, if not the best cup of coffee in London. And it’s not just about the coffee, the staff are knowledgeable and friendly and will help you out if you need to make a choice on what kind of coffee to order there or what kind of coffee to take home. BooM!
So, Alex, you’re saying now, why only four stars.
Well, I will tell you why. Because this coffee is so good, and in such a nice location, and the staff are so friendly, that everyone wants to go here all the time and there will always be a queue. Ugh. (Ok, maybe not always, but close to it.) And then, the spot is so small, that you have to pray to the God of Luck and Chance just to happen across one seat, much less two if, you know, you’re meeting someone here. Blarg again.
However, if you wait and take your coffee to go, or if you wait and find yourself a coveted seat, your day will be made. Hell, your week. Maybe even your year. That’s how good this coffee is.

Great coffee, they even let us brought in a cake we bought from a café next door. Long queue but worth the wait.
I would suggest they have more seatings as we had to wait ages to get two seats. Staff are a bit slow in cleaning up the rubbish on the tables, and I know they’re busy but some of them could do with a smile… they were a moody bunch when we were there last week. Maybe it’s the weather.

Monmouth is one of the places that feel like they been around forever and they are in no way following the trend of speciality coffee — they started roasting in 1978 so before many who are into speciality coffee were born. This locations is next to Borough market and I have been here numerous times, can’t really believe I have not reviewed it earlier.
The line is often long outside and the seating indoors is limited so I mainly view this as a take away place. Do not let the line freak you out as they are remarkably efficient and they have people taking orders while you stand in line so if you are lucky your coffee is already made when you reach the front. Every cup is made to order and they have an impressive variety of coffee available every single day. The pour overs are what I would recommend but they also fo espresso based beverages.
Quality of coffee is in general good, the roast is a tad but darker than what I prefer and the amount of people here can make the quality a bit uneven at times. I try to avoid weekends as it is usually even busier then with the onslaught of people pouring into Borough market and at those time I prefer their third location under the rail road arches in Bermondsey (only open on weekends). Food wise there is not much on offer, some pastries and croissants so better option to garb something from the stalls at Borough market.
In general it is not the best coffee place in London but it is far above many others in south London and service is friendly so if you are at borough market or just around there and feel like a cup of coffee it is not a bad choice.

There’s clearly a reason why Monmouth has a line down the block.
I’ve only been once, so I can’t yet put them in the same league with Blue Bottle, Stumptown, Fourbarrel, or Café Grumpy, but the coffees we had were strong, flavorful, and well-​made, if a bit small. The pastries were very good, the seating area was packed but laid out well and nicely designed, and the staff were friendly despite being in a hurry to keep up with all the customers.
The line definitely gets out of hand very quickly — we arrived around 8:30 on a Saturday and only waited a few minutes, but by 9am it was 20 people deep. I’d say you should get there early and double order!

Bei Monmouth handelt es sich um eine Kaffeerösterei mit angeschlossenem Café. Mittlerweile gibt es insgesamt drei Läden. Ich kenne aber nur den am Borough Market. Und der ist spitze! Qualität seit Jahren gleichbleibend gut!
Monmouth ist modern-​gemütlich eingerichtet. Man kann sowohl drinnen (ein großer Tisch, ein paar Barhocker), als auch draußen (auf den Bänken ums Café verteilt) sitzen. Der Großteil der Gäste nimmt den Kaffee aber «to go» und schlendert danach entweder Richtung Soutbank oder über den Borough Market.
Kaffeerösterei: Monmouth röstet selbst und verkauft den Kaffee frisch vor Ort. Ich finde den Kaffee ganz hervorragend und nehme gerne ein Packung mit. Schön ist, dass man ihn auch vor Ort probieren kann!
Café: Vor dem Kaffee ist immer eine recht lange Schlange. Aber: 1. Lohnt es sich zu warten. 2. Geht‘s doch recht zügig. Es ist meist ein Angestellter «an der Schlange» unterwegs und nimmt schonmal Bestellungen auf. Die Bestellung sind so gut getimet, dass der frisch gebrühte bzw. gepresste Kaffee gerade fertig wird, wenn man gerade an der Kasse steht. Mein Lieblingskaffee ist der Filterkaffee (mit einem Schuss warmer Milch: «white filter»). Er wird frisch gemahlen (jede Tasse wird wirklich vor den Augen gemahlen) und dann klassisch im Porzellanfilter aufgebrüht. Geschmacklich wirklich ganz großes Kino.
Wer mag kann sich an den großen Tisch (Es gibt nur einen großen Tisch) im Café setzen und für rund 3,00 GBP frühstücken. Marmeladen und Baguette und Butter stehen am Tisch. Einfach zahlen und loslegen. Auch die Kuchen– und Brownieauswahl muss sich nicht verstecken (ich empfehle aber, den Kaffee to go zu nehmen und sich auf dem benachbarten Borough Market durchzuschlemmen).

sieht wirklich gut aus — nur kann ich den Tipp um 7 ae emm da zu sein nicht unterstützen, da es erst um 7.30 öffnet :-)

Wichtig ist, daß Du es southerk sprichst, diesen angesagten Stadtteil am südlichen Ende der Londonbridge — nicht south wark, wie man vermuten könnte, ok? Und der Laden hier heißt auch nicht halb Französich mein und dann englisch Mund, sondern mommoth, kurz, bündig, am Ende leicht gespuckt.
Die Umgebung hier ist WIRKLICH weltklasse. Flair wird hier literweise versprüht, am meisten so gegen 7 ey-​äm. Marktbeschicker schleppen dann Schweinehälften aus den Lorries, frisches Obst und ebensolchen Fisch — ich hab’s gesehen: aus ein und demselben Laster wird das Zeug gehieft und schick ausgelegt wohlfeil drappiert, ich faß’ das nicht So sind die Briten.
Also auf jedenfall hin, wenn Du schon in London bist. Auch Soho und diesen schicken Markt mit Sängern — sicher, aber vor allem Borough Market!
Ach ja, es gibt hier frisch gebrühten Filterkaffee! Natürlich gibt es auch ein Chrommonster aus Italien mit den guten Heißmilchkaffeecocktails für Powerpointjunkies to go, jaja, aber wirklich gut ist der frisch gebrühte Filterkaffee im Monmouth. Nimm dir ein Pain au Chocolat vom Tisch, setz Dich an das kleine Fenster auf dem Halbgeschoß und verpasse dein erstes Meeting. Yeah!
