A lovely little restaurant in Golders Green. I’ve passed by the place so many times and thought it was just a bakery/coffee place. But then, one day, I actually noticed the menu on the outside wall and decided this was a place to go! I chose to get a Bento box with a spicy seafood dish. It was quite the bargain as it came with so many ‘parts’: — miso soup(like all miso soups) — small salad — salt & pepper chicken — this was the best part of the meal in some ways as it was slightly sweet as well as peppered, and perfectly fried — sticky rice — spicy and citrusy seafood in a sauce — this was also quite tasty It appears that it’s a meeting place for many people for coffee or snacks during the day. Service was appropriate and the place was clean and attractive. I’ll be back to try more.

The Taiwanese beef noodles are quite good. A little spicy, but not too much that it’s unbearable. The bubble tea is a bit small and the pearls are not as squishy as they could be. Overall, good meal but a little overpriced.

Great Taiwanese food. I didn’t have the Bubble tea; instead I got the Black tea, which is also my favorite back in Taiwan. It tasted really like the ones we have back home, the traditional ones which we all appreciate. Ma po Tofu though isn’t that spicy as expected tasted pretty well with rice. Indeed a fabulous restaurant for Taiwanese or Chinese to enjoy and foreigners to try out.

There is a new menu, with a current 15% off, however not sure if the prices are reasonable for the quality of food. OK, the food is consistent. I usually go for Tawainese deep fried chicken, stewed minced pork, stewed egg, pickles and rice. But nothing wow or worth the price, even for the neighboring area. I think a bit of menu exploring is to be done, but more recently the papaya milk(shake) was quite delish. I have tried the spring rolls on a few occasion, poorly wrapped, even though consistent. they are consistently average/borderline bad… If you are a Golders Green local, try this place out. however, travel into Soho for a more valuable and taste bud tantalizing experience !

Had a small meal here which wasn’t outstanding but definitely still enjoyable. I did however LOVE their papaya milk. Look forward to popping in again sometime.

Old Tree seems to be a Taiwanese restaurant in disguise as a bakery. I used to walk by and never realise it was a restaurant and not a bakery/café until I came across the Unilocal review. I’m glad though because this is the first Taiwanese restaurant i have been to(or heard of) in London and I am always excited to try new things. My favourite dish here is the kung po chicken which was well-flavoured and had perfect texture. I also like the number 1 rice with chicken and prawns, which is good comfort food and a good complement to other dishes(as well as extremely generous in portion size!). The sweet and sour prawn appetiser is okay as well and I tried the Taiwanese Stir Fried Chicken in basil, chilli, garlic & black sesame oil to see what the fuss is about(I think it’s also called 3 cup chicken) but I find the kung po chicken much yummier. The salt and pepper chicken and the morning glory vegetable are okay too but nothing special for me. I have been here a few times now and tried a lot of things mentioned in the other reviews. They have been good but sometimes I think the flavour is bit too exotic for me but if you know your Taiwanese, you will probably be more comfortable with the beef noodle soup. It was well-made and the beef was great but it just tasted too spicy for me in really unfamiliar ways. Old Tree is also a bakery that sells boba tea so I had to try some milk tea while I was here. It was alright not my favourite.

Old Tree in Golders Green is an informal Taiwanese restaurant attached to a bakery serving authentic dishes. Recommended dishes include: Taiwanese sausages £6.50 Deep fried pepper & salt pork chops with stewed egg and rice £7.50 Belly pork with stewed egg and rice For the more adventurous diners there are some exotic sounding choices on the menu eg. Stewed pigs trotters, stewed ducks tongue, pigs ears & pigs intestines. The café also serves a selection of bubble tea, on this visit I tried the coconut bubble tea and have also tried taro. I would not recommend the bubble tea, they lack flavour and far inferior to those in specialist bubble tea shops. Old tree is a good option for a quick informal good value authentic Taiwanese meal if you happen to be in the area or stopping by to get cakes and buns from the bakery.

Old Tree Bakery(Golders Green branch) is one of my favourite place to go for dinner. Every time I take friends here, I will always recommend the Taiwanese sausages. It has never disappoint so far! There are many dishes on the menu that are good to order but I have my favourite which is the Taiwanese Lo-Bak(Minced Pork) with stewed egg and rice. Golders Green branch serve it the best way with the dish separate from the steamed rice. It gives me that home feeling. As well a variety of food there are a selection of drinks, including bubble tea. But when I am Old Tree Bakery I recommend their cream caramel tea. It is the only place I know in London that serves milk with a whole cream caramel tea. It is a great alternative to having the bubbles and also for those who do not like bubbles. It is a drink with a dessert all in one! Whether it is lunch or dinner, you can round off your meal with the beautiful cakes or the different flavoured cream puff — including green tea cream puff.

Taste like home in London! I bagged my friend, who lives in London for one year, to come here because I got home sick during this UK travel. Without much expectation, this place surprised me greatly! I had the fried chicken, which is the same taste I had at home — super nice that I almost cried. Later we bought some Taiwanese pastry(taro pastry and green bean pastry) and they are all good. The hostess was very nice for treating us more. Lovely ;-)

I am a royal customer to this shop, visiting there so often(once a week). Quick service, a variety of foods, clean place… I love this place so much! It’s a bit pricy but worth it. My favourite is teriyaki bento box. They also have good noodle menu.

Good food. Taiwanese food makes a refreshing change from Chinese and Japanese. A bit expensive, nice cakes also.

I love this place, whether it’s to catch up with friends over a glass of fresh juice or bubble tea, or dinner with family. The portion is good price and the food is delicious. Staff a bit annoying but overall I love going to Old Tree as all the buns & cakes are baked freshly. I think everyone should give it a go!

We drive across London just to go here, not often but a few times. Worth the trip as it is very hard to find Taiwanese food in London at reasonable prices. Indeed it’s hard to find Taiwanese food in London. Can only agree with the other reviews that this place is great to go to.

A recommendation… and a welcome one! With a taiwanese wife it is sometimes tough to please her in the food department! However, this was all it was cracked up to be. True taiwanese food. …A great selection and helpful conscientious staff. Homemade sausages, Crispy salt and very peppery deep fried chicken, sweet basil and chilli chicken, complimentary soup, pickled cabbage and offal galore! Really very good indeed. A place that will grow in popularity just because it is GOOD!

Best Taiwanese food we have found so far in London. My wife is from Taiwan and loves this place. The beef noodle soup is awesome. Great selection of deserts too. They are open early and late everyday, like a typical Taiwanese hang out. The people here are super friendly. Can’t wait to go back to try more things!

Yummy yummy… Old Tree made me feel very happy in my tummy! I’d actually been here before, but had only tried their pastries. Yesterday, I finally managed to came back to try out their dinner menu. And before I continue, let me add that in order to lend my review some credibility, I brought along two very picky Taiwanese men… Here’s my/our verdict: It’s very good and we’re definitely fans of Old Tree! In fact, I was very pleased with most of the dishes that we ate. I especially liked the salt’n’pepper chicken, which was nice and crunchy from the outside, but pleasantly moist and chewy from the inside. Another favourite of mine was the pork belly in a nice sweet-soya-y sauce. In fact, the sauce was so yummy that I just kept on eating it simply over the rice. We also ate: the three-cup chicken(I was told that it’s called three cup-chicken as the sauce is made up of three different liquids of equal parts); steamed Taiwanese Meatball, Taiwanese sausage and a serving of Morning Glory(a typical Chinese vegetable stir-fried up in lots of garlic). On the side we received complimentary servings of pickled vegetables and a clear broth with vegetables(for a visualisation, please have a look at the pictures I uploaded). The best, though, was yet to come: Chinese Year Cake! As yesterday was Chinese New Year, we received a complimentary portion of this traditional New-Years dessert. I can’t really explain what it is, but it’s some kind of gooey paste that is fried up in a egg-batter…so good! Final verdict: There is good Taiwanese food in London after all… well, maybe not in Central London, but Golders Green is worth a trip in any case!

Old Tree is part noodle restaurant, part café, and part chinese bakery.(Be aware, the baked goods are not self-serve.) I’ve been heading into chinatown for my cheap pastries, so seeing this place in my new neighborhood was exciting – there are a few things that make Old Tree really different from your standard chinese bakery, though. 1. As far as I could tell, there’s no pork on the premises. Though pork buns are a staple of chinese bakery fare – they seem to have replaced it with duck. That’s fine by me, really, and seems to be a good adaptation to being in a very Jewish area. 2. The goods are not quite standard in general. There are mooncakes and coconut buns, but most of what they had I’d never seen before – duck and pickle buns, «mexican» custard buns, chocolate cream buns. 3. The prices are about twice what I’d expect to pay in chinatown. But for this level of convenience, I’ll be back. Overall, a good choice if this is closer to you than chinatown is or if you’re looking for something in the style of a chinese bakery but just a little bit different.
