Popped in here to have a drink with my main man after work on a Wednesday. It is a great spot just off the tourist trail. They have a nice selection of beers and the staff was super nice. We did only stay for one drink, but we plan to head back to try out the food and see if they have consistently good service. The space is amazing. Great room inside with many comfortable places to sit as well as a very cool and spacious back porch with a covered portion. It was warm on Wednesday, but I did notice they have heaters for when it gets cooler outside. I will be back soon!

Great pub hidden in the back streets of Greenwich. This pub has a lot of seating inside, that expands into conservatory then a nice garden with potted plants and sun umbrellas, it’s a great place to chill out on a sunny day. The food and the service were fantastic, although a little on the pricey side and the only slight dissappointment was the potato rosti served with the Chicken Ballotine dish as it was a bit spongy. Otherwise the portions are well sized and the drinks aren’t badly priced. The atmosphere is definitely relaxing and enjoyable and good place for families. We visited on a Saturday lunch time on a sunny day and it wasn’t packed, which was nice.

A traditional, laid back place, just off the beaten track, very relaxing and a nice escape from the busier areas of Greenwich. Friendly staff, nice selection of drinks.

The ‘Tolley’ is still my favorite pub after all these years. It’s the only ‘real’ pub left in Greenwich which all the locals have been using since I was a child. Full of character and atmosphere this wins the best pub in Greenwich, hands down!

With so many of Greenwich’s pubs turned into bland copies of each other, the Richard is a refreshing change: a «proper» pub serving traditional and well-kept real ale, with — judging from the conversation we had with the barman — its staff clearly passionate about maintaining top quality beer. This week I ventured through the left-hand door. Basic but comfortable furnishings, with nice high benches and seats giving a good view out of the window. A small TV was switched on above the door, but the sound was turned down, so not intrusive. Beer was excellent — I tried both of the Young’s Bitters on offer, while my companion opted for the Guinness.

Quite simply the best pub in Greenwich. Full of character but not in an ‘old man’ way. Good range of lagers and wines. Good atmosphere. Clean. Big and well maintained ‘beer garden’ — or terrace to be more precise. The only thing I cannot vouch for is the food as I have not eaten here yet but judging by other reviews that sounds promising too.

This pub is nice for the following reasons… 1) Easy no nonsense/but really nice service 2) Great food 3) outdoor seating w/minimal tourists. 4) good ales/pints/ciders blah blah. it really is a great«stop in» in Greenwich.

I didn’t we think we had a chance in hell of getting a table in this pub’s sunny beer garden on a glorious spring day like today, but lo and behold we did, and very nice it was, too. If I’m in Greenwich I regularly find myself in a pub on Royal Hill these days — they’re just so much nicer and quieter than all of the pubs down by the market. Food here is pretty decent, though the portions could be a bit more generous. I opted for the all day breakfast — and the seventeen or so baked beans(which they served in a RAMEKIN for chrissakes) looked a little bit pathetic. Still, a nice pub which I’m sure I’ll go back to again and again when the sun is shining.

Young’s pub in Greenwich. This pub looks great both inside and out. The inside is a nice two room wooden pub interior and the outside beer garden is large and catches the sun nicely on a lazy afternoon. While the Young’s beer is perfectly nice, the fact that this pub is next door to another pub with such an amazing range of beers means that it doesn’t compare that well and those of us that like to try better and more interesting drinks might be tempted to buy a drink there and bring it over to this pub(perhaps simply going to the other pub is not an option due to being with a group of friends or due to encountering a full beer garden). I have seen someone achieve thisthere is a gate between the gardens, but it only opens from one side. Or you could try the front way and hope the bar staff are not looking. They probably wouldn’t have noticed during my visit as they seemed busy moaning about some staff dispute while serving customers.

Nice pub with excellent beer, but the food operation is shambolic. You order at the bar but if part of your order is a burger you have to take it to the barbecue. Then they do you a chicken burger instead of the grilled stuffed herb chicken you ordered. You explain the position and when the chicken comes it’s dry with minimal stuffing, the potato salad is a few new potatoes and nothing else, and some idiot chef thinks that it’s a good idea to grill asparagus, so it’s hard and dry. The burger doesn’t come with the tsatsiki the menu promised, although to be fair the lamb and chips are good. And no one brings you any cutlery or serviettes or sauces! What this place needs desperately is a restaurant manager instead of a band of amateurs. Young’s pubs can be excellent(I know, I live in Wandsworth) but they need to try much harder here.

I went here for around ten years and it’s still somewhere I pop back to when I’m in town. It’s a very old fashioned feel inside, all dark wooden furnature, wood bar and a nice dim atmosphere. The beer is excellent, with a good Youngs selection and the tastiest pork scratchings you’ll find. The menu seems to be largely preprepared stuff but the Sunday roast is well worth it and if they have a BBQ at the weekend head down. There’s a large garden and smoking area out back and a few books lying around if you fancy a read. A very nice place to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Lovely old pub with a big beer garden, hidden away from the worst of the Greenwich tourist hordes. Good Young’s beer with well made pub food. Friendly staff. Only downside now I no longer live in the immediate area is that parking is a nightmare.

Probably the best pub in Greenwich. Great beer, decent food, good service, nice garden and fiendly plus off the tourist track. My fave.

My partner goes here more than I do but occasionally I come by for a drink or for some food. I go through the entrance on the right which leads you into the bar and then you can also go out back where they have a very large space(there’s a left entrance that I think just goes to a room on the left connected to the other side of the bar). On nice days, going out back is really nice. The food they serve is pretty good, too, although they stop serving lunch on weekends fairly early and don’t serve anything in between lunch and dinner. But that’s a small complaint. Richard I has a homey feel but isn’t dank and dark.

In stark contrast to the pub next door, the Richard I offers fast, polite service, a huge beer garden, great food. It’s a Youngs pub, so has a good selection of great beer. Not as many as the one next door, but it’s quality not quantity I’m after.

The best pub in greenwich, no contest. Away from the tourist centre, a real classic ‘proper’ pub. Good beer range(although I’m not an expert) but have always enjoyed the sunday lunch. I disagree that it has suffered from the Greenwich Union next door — I think they cater to a different audience — the Richard I is a more relaxed ‘drinkers’ pub, for me the GU is maybe more a nighttime bar.

where do i start? i have nothing but praise for youngs– in particular the special and winter warmer. i have known this pub since i was a nipper– it never gets busy, and thats what i like. ok, some of the decore is a bit gloomy, but it IS a british institution, lol. i would definately recommend this place. whats more, is the infamous tea hut just down the road. don’t know it?! where the heck have you been!

I’ve tried to get on board with this pub. It’s difficult — my favourite pub in London is right next door. But it just doesn’t add up to me. I hear from people who knew the pub before the Greenwich Union say that it used to be a much better pub. Though I don’t think it’s the case that the Union has ruined the pub’s trade — they both still seem pretty busy. I don’t think it helps that I’m not a fan of Youngs Ale. I find it watery and tasteless(I know, moan away — I’m not an ale drinker). But I can just drink lager I guess. It’s cheap in here though so that makes me happy. The beer garden is lovely. Unfortunately, it was a tiny bit too cold and windy to stay outside for more than ten minutes which ruined that. Instead we huddled inside and ate expensive not very nice olives. The staff are nice enough. It’s fine. I think on a good day the pub might creep up to a four, but it would have to be sunny and I’d have to be a bit drunk already.
