How does nobody seem to know about this place?! Hidden up a discreet staircase to the left of the main Ronnie Scott’s jazz bar, we passed a ton of bars bursting with people and were surprised to find this one was all but empty on a Friday at 6.30pm(though filled up whilst we were in there). Four of us slid into one of the black velvet booths, most of which had reserved signs for later in the eve. It looked like it was set up for live music later too but sadly we’d disappeared for a feed by then — will have to go again! Luckily we did stick around for a couple of rounds of cocktails — a decent old fashioned and a whisky sour later and I was pretty happy. It was table service too so the perfect spot for chilled out Friday drinks and jokes, without elbow wars and waiting at the bar. Not somewhere I’d spend the whole night, but it’s a nice spot and something different for early eve drinks or late night for the music.

Want the Ronnie Scott’s experience without the high ticket price or super-limited space? Then glide on up the stairs to the bar area, where huge talents(with only slightly smaller names) gig regularly, dance-classes take place, and a particularly well-put-together cocktail list impresses. Their take on a Manhattan is, for me, the second best I’ve ever had(I couldn’t say where I had the best, because it’d be classed as shameless self promotion).

The bar upstairs from Ronnie Scott’s(imaginitively named, Ronnie’s Bar) was previously Members Only — however all that’s changed now, and it gives the rest of us access to quite a funky little room! Open nightly from 6pm, or from 9pm for a small fee, you can head up & enjoy groovy tunes from an array of top talented acts, and chill out in the classy surrounds with a cocktail or 3. Every night’s got a different slant to it — Wednesday is Jazz Jam night, and when we went in on Thursday(The Cooker) we were treated to the fine tones of resident band Mamafeelgood Funkagenda, who had the whole room on their feet & grooving out til closing time. Drinks are a little pricier than standard pubs, but not in that crippling and unjustified way that so many pretentious clubs are. Having this new lineup upstairs @ Ronnie’s is a good complement to the more serious jazz in the main room downstairs. This is an intimate little nightspot I can definitely see myself finding my way back to on a regular basis!
