Royal Standard

I had a lovely night here on my birthday. There’s plenty of space — and lots of seats. It’s recently been tarted up with a refurbishment and there’s a good selection of beers on tap. It’s not a cosy boozer but it’s not devoid of atmosphere. I’d recommend it on a night out with a group.

Food is terrible. Customer service an oxymoron. And, at this pub, the customer is always wrong!

Would of got a 4 star if it wasnt for rude customer service! I ordered a burger meal with onion rings and half way through eating i realise I have none! after asking the barmaid she told me they weas out (thanks for telling me) and when I said what am I entitled to instead she said she would ask the chef (never did just played on mobile phone) she came back and said the chef dont do alternatives and theres nothing she could do! Thanks for knocking me! turned a potential frequent visitor in to a never again!

Management of the pub has recently changed, but the subtle changes have not been detrimental (unless you count your local being active on Facebook, that is!). There is an increased focus on hosting events and getting people to come in for some of the TV sport, and — in addition to the weekly quiz — there are also Poker sessions and occasional live music (seems the recession has made it more important to get the punters in).
The Standard also seems set on maintaining a better selection of real ales these days. Guest ales come and go very regularly and are generally well kept — I have even switched from my regular lager to drinking bitter as a result.
The pub also runs special promotions during local events (it opened early for the London Marathon for example, and RunToTheBeat), and has also hosted charity fundraising events for local groups — one day, I walked in to a fantastic selection of cakes all on sale in aid of a local toddler group (I think).
Of course, big games on TV make the pub busy, and as there aren’t a lot of local alternatives, sometimes you just have to grin and bear it. Service is generally very efficient and friendly.
Free wifi is still available — with the week’s code usually chalked up on a small blackboard at the right hand end of the bar.

This is really the best pub in the blackheath area. Unpretentious, friendly and with a wide selection of beers. The foods not bad either.

A good pub to watch football in a comfortable style with OK food. it can get busy on big match days so get there early for a seat. Has Real Ale as well and always been friendly when I have visited.

The Royal Standard is the only bar in the small village of Stratheden Parade, Blackheath. It’s nto a bad bar, with a good range of drinks and a decent bar menu.
It’s very much a locals pub, but they’re a friendly lot if you make an effort to talk to them. There are a couple of pool tables if you fancy a game, and they have sports on if you’re a football fan.

The Royal Standard, located in the general Blackheath area (not the village itself), is a fairly quiet pub serving a decent selection of alcoholic beverages, hot drinks and food.
The décor is a bit quirky: a random brass statue stands in one corner, cool modern art is framed in antiquated gold-​painted frames (making the handful of plasma screens seem out of synch), while the lamps (including a few metallic chandeliers) and wallpaper remind you of a hotel lobby. The pub thus feels neither particularly cosy nor traditional. But this doesn’t detract from its functionality!
There’s a decent selection of food on the menu, nothing out-​of-​this-​world. Just be careful what you order: a portion of onion rings turned out to have only six measly onions, while a portion of chips with garlic mayonnaise was enough to share between two people. It’s a bit hit or miss it seems, and beware: the kitchen closes at 9.
Nevertheless, they’ve got a varied selection of wine, beer, cider, ale and spirits, and very reasonably priced coffees (including lattes and cappucinos). The servers are friendly and approachable.
All in all, a quiet pub where you can sit and converse. They play interesting music (funk, soul) instead of grating «party hits» and hold a fun quiz on Sunday evenings at 9 pm.
