Spex In The City

I really wanted to buy my glasses from here! The name is brilliant and the staff are easily the most helpful out of all the glasses shops I looked around.
If you don’t have a friend to help you choose your glasses, then seriously, just come here and ask for their advice. The chatty bloke that helped me was a total star. It doesn’t look like they have a huge range, as they are all sort of squished onto shelves BUT once you start browsing, they will help you pick out styles that will suit you… and there seem to be more and more frames packed away — but the staff know where to find them!
In the end I didn’t buy my glasses from here, but I wanted to write them a review anyway as they are such sweeties with such pretty frames.

I can’t thank Gillian and colleagues in Spex in the City for the trouble they took to test my eyes thoroughly, find me a great pair of glasses for me and get the lenses right.
Gillian was very concerned that I could not read properly with my new glasses so after considerable investigation and thought as to what the problem was she realised that I needed a shorter depth between my distance and reading focal points. To accommodate this she changed the frames and had new lenses made. I am now delighted by my new glasses to the extent that I do not even think about whether I can see properly through them at all as they are right at every distance. The range of their frames is very extensive and more interesting than standard opticians. Well worth paying the extra for.

Spex in the City would, I’m certain, be Carrie Bradshaw-​approved. But nevermind, as I can confirm: it’s certainly ME-​approved!
I’ve been in several times, a need for glasses looming on the near-​horizon despite my procrastination keeping me from having a prescription. I said that I was «browsing» and assumed that would mean that I was not a customer of interest. Incorrect! Despite explaining that I had yet to get my prescription for the lenses I need, and that I was just doing some early scoping out of options, the owner was fantastic.
We talked about look, we talked about where I’d be wearing the glasses (FUNKY OFFICE FRAMES, PLZ), we tried on options. I learned that a lot of what I *thought* looked great did, in fact, not look great on me. So helpful, so warm, so interested in providing a personalized shopping experience for something that is such a big purchase.
I have yet to get the Rx for those dang lenses (gah, I know, I know!), but you can trust that I’ll be looping back to Spex In The City when I do!

I have a –10 prescription so it is hard to find glasses that look ok on me. In fact I have never really had a pair of glasses that I really like. I’ve recently bought a pair from Spex in the City and I love them! Gillian gave me really good advice and the frames she recommended were the perfect shape for my high prescription. As a result the lenses in this new pair are actually thinner than my last glasses even though the prescription is higher. She has a great choice of frames (but not so many that you just loose track of what you do and don’t like). I will definitely go there next time I need glasses!

Spex in the City rocks! Gillian the owner is warm and welcoming and exceedingly friendly. You couldn’t wish for anyone more customer-​focused and passionate about her craft. Having ventured in a few times, I finally took the plunge, booked an eye test and picked up a new pair of frames, designed by Gillian herself in fact.
Gillian is interested in making sure you buy the right frames, not just flogging you something that she knows she can make a big margin on, and that counts for a lot, because you are going to be wearing those specs an awful lot.
As we speak, I await the arrival of my new glasses, but I have every confidence in her ability to deliver the product to the highest standard.

I called up Spex in the City as I need to get a new prescription as part of a desk assessment at work.
I spoke with Gillian and I was lucky enough to get an appointment this afternoon. I was a bit early so I tried on a few pairs of glasses and watched as Gillian was helping a lady that was trying on frames. She is very pleasant and extremely knowledgable and when I got my prescription she even kindly provided me with my PD so that I can buy my sunglasses online.
As well as designing some of the frames in there Gillian you can also buy frames from other companies and the range changes frequently with new stock arriving weekly. This has been an absolute gem of a find and I am now off to tell my workmates!

Had always noticed this little place when walking past and the quirky retro-​style glasses always caught my eye in all the best ways. So when it came time to pick myself a new pair this was the first port of call for me — and I needed to look no further!
They’ve a beautiful range of frames, with styling more interesting and unique than the standard designers see in those bland high street opticians, with some of the frames being exclusive to the store or handmade.
I normally struggle to find frames that I like, but I ended up with 2 fab pairs I just fell in love with, and could have easily come away with more if the budget had allowed! Prices were also quite good there too.
Also the staff are brilliant! I had wonderful advice, with the lovely lady there taking the time to properly look at my face shape, colouring, and listen to find out my personal style, and then suggesting pairs to best suit me — as a result I fell for one pair I hadn’t even thought twice about on my own.
When I next need frames or sunglasses I’ll be heading straight back without hesitation.
