History

Established in 1800.

«the bank» has appeared in a number of guises through the ages. Its name originates from the times of the Friendship river, the bank of which the building was built upon. It has been in its current incarnation for just over two years now.

After trying to get into The Gunners Pub before an Arsenal match, we ended up here.
Pretty average spot with outdoor seating in the back. Stopped by about two hours before kick and it was pretty quiet.
When back for the next match, will try our hand at another spot.

This WAS our local until recently when we brought our sleeping 10 month old along at 4PM on a Sunday, when it was virtually empty but a few punters, and the bar man unceremoniously declared no children were allowed and asked us to leave. Which is funny since it literally says on the front of the pub «Your FAMILY FRIENDLY local» (
).
We’d been there many times before with the wee one, and had always felt welcome, even one match day the man on the door had swept us and our pram in the door saying there was plenty of room for us. So not sure what has changed but we’ll not be going back. Luckily we’ve found a new local, Horatia, who actually live up to the neighbourhood family pub ethos.

This place is everything you’d want in a traditional local pub — friendly staff and punters, nice choice of ales and very cozy atmosphere. This place is not trendy or happening, but it’s a perfect place to have a quick one after work or while away a few hours on a Sunday afternoon. And it has a lovely courtyard in the back to accommodate smokers or anyone wanting to enjoy their drinks al fresco. Also worth noting: it’s one of the few pubs in the area tolerant of non-Arsenal fans on match days.

I was not very happy with this place. The name and the look of the outside of the pub made me think this was a nice country pub in the city. However, the inside was just a tad shabby, and the locals were just glued to several tv sets showing sports. No country feel at all, but rather more of a divey feel. However, I was mostly put off by the strong smell of toilet cleaner, which seemed to pervade the pub, and which distracted me from enjoying my pint.

This might sound like a most unwelcome sequal to hollywood feelgood trytohard film ‘pay it forward’, but not only is this pub not a film… but somehow it is actually a perfect example of the good old fashioned english boozer, right down to the typical style carpet and seats (The 2 bars that were obviously separated traditionally now join around the island bar). No idea where the name comes from.
Beer choice is interesting, without being unusual. My pint of seafarers was top notch.

A traditional little local, with two bar areas and a central servery. It serves a selection of real ales and apparently the Guinness also comes recommended.
However, it seems to have gone off a bit during the course of the year (2010) — the beers are not as well kept, and the staff, though obliging, don’t seem very knowledgeable about their products. I think the management may have changed.
The interior is still warm and cosy in winter — especially if the fires are going, and in the summer there’s a small terrace at the back. The clientele are mostly older locals. Overall, the lack of pretension and background noise makes for a very welcoming environment, but they need to get their beers sorted out.
Like everywhere around here, it gets busy when Arsenal play at home.
