Specialties
The Speaker is a real pub located between Westminster and Victoria, in the heart of what was once upon a time — the Devil’s Acre. The pub dates back to the 1720’s although the current building is early Victorian. We serve 5 real ales on hand pumps, 2 regular and 3 guest ales that change daily. We also serve other draught beers, wines and spirits and a large selection of bottled beers from around the world. The food is home made and served throughout the day and the atmosphere relaxed and friendly. We have no music, TV screens or fruit (slot) machines, so a great place to have a nice, relaxing drink. We are also in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide.
History
Established in 1720.
A pub since the 1720’s, we can trace back the names of at least 45 licensees in (nearly) 300 years of history. Originally called the Castle, the pub was renamed the Elephant & Castle around 1800 and was renamed the Speaker in 1999. Situated in Devil’s Acre, one of the most notorious areas in the country. A veritable den of criminality and poverty, we are sure the pub has seen some sights!
