Always a safe choice if you live nearby. It gets rammed during the summer and the food tends to be consistently of good quality. Decent pub in a very busy part of town.

Enjoying some of the last pretty days of summer we went to The Windmill for a Sunday roast with some friends. We were a bit miffed that we couldn’t book a table one the same day but were able to find one easily, right by the dining room. Helpful bartenders directed me to a great ‘made-in-London’ wheat beer and it went well with the salmon I ordered. Salmon was cooked well, smooth & buttery and my bf’s ‘mixed roast’ with lamb, beef, and chicken was tender and flavorful. The grilled butternut squash was also a treat, overall a great meal. As an added bonus we had a few drinks(ok, bottles of wine…) on the patio and was able to build a ‘perimiter’ for our 1yr old companion to run around safely. It was a beautiful day with great food, friends, and even a bit less worry about the toddler running around. The Windmill is a must visit!

i came here on a sunday for the pub quiz with a big group of friends. we were expecting a good pub quiz — it was probably the easiest pub quiz we have all ever done, and the pub quiz ladies were like two(unintentionally) hilarious school teachers, but we still had tons of fun. we also tried out the sunday roasts, which were really pretty good. i had the chicken and didn’t even make a dent in it. what i did manage to eat was delicious though, and i liked the addition of butternut squash to the roast veggies. they are probably the fastest people at getting your food out to you. i think there was about 2 minutes between me ordering and the food being at the table. if it had been any other time of meal, this would have alarmed me, but it’s not like you can cook a roast to order, so this is totally fine by me! they have an interesting wine list for a pub, with offers on certain bottles. my friend was also pleased because they had a good ale selection, and he has turned in to an old man with a nasty ale habit! what i enjoyed best about this pub though was when the pub quiz was over, the place cleared out, but we stayed for hours having a few drinks, lots of laughs and lots of lounging on their very comfy sofas — it was a really great atmosphere and a really lovely place to spend a lazy sunday evening with friends.

Instead of spending most of Christmas day in the kitchen we decided to book a nice pub lunch at the Windmill and avoid all the mess. We arrived promptly and were taken to our table, 10 seconds later we were given our starter! Mine was scallops which were quite nice. I just felt the service was a bit rushed. The numerous waiters who came to attend us kept asking us if we were ready for our main course. I normally like attentive service, but this was ridiculous. Overall the food was pretty good, but I expected a bit more for Christmas day, especially as it was £60 a head without wine. Next time I would recommend one or two waiters per table(not 6!), and to try and make it a bit more special. I’d go to the Windmill again, just not on Xmas day.

The fish and chips were was absolutely fantastic! really massive portion! The haddock was HUGE! And the chips were like thick, rustic wedges! It took me quite some time to finish! but i did!

Most energetic Sunday pub quiz crowd! Even though I live quite far from Clapham, I look forward to walking by the park to get to the comfy sofas at the pub. Do get here early to save an area for friends — I didn’t do this and lost out on winning the quiz because everyone was dispersed around in different groups. The food portions are huge and perfect for sharing. Another plus is the great cider variety.

I love me some Windmill on the Common. I love it in the winter for it’s vaulted ceiling room with comfy couches and roaring fire(and at least on Sat night some live music) and I love it in the summer for it’s plentiful outdoor tables and space and being literally a skip from the Common itself. True it’s not some super happening place, but when I got out I want to talk with my friends not meet strangers so it’s perfect for me. Only negative I can think of is that they don’t serve Hoegarden any more, boo. Other than that. This place is my favourite neighbourhood stomp.

In the summer it’s worth the effort, grab a few beers or a jug of pimms, this place has an extensive beer garden in the form of Clapham Common. Inside it’s not that great and the place feels dated and shabby. The food is ok and nothing more. if the sun isn’t out then I wouldn’t bother with this place I’m afraid…

I always think this place quite strange. In fact, I often find Youngs pubs a bit strange — they seem to try and include lots of different styles all in one place. In this one, there’s a big conservatory area lit with fairy lights, which is mainly used for dining, then there’s a high-ceilinged middle room decorated with African-type artefacts and a modern chandelier-esque lighting display, and then the entrance bar is pretty standard pub style with an alcoved area to the back. So it’s all a little random and the incongruence of one place to the next means that none quite reaches its potential. However, this is not a bad place, especially due to its location in the middle of the common. I used to live across the park from it and enjoyed the walk there, I just never felt quite at home inside. The food is pretty standard — reliable but nothing special. It would definitely be better if the whole place could magically turn around and face the common. Alas, I’m not sure we have the skills for this yet. As it is, it’s great for the summer when you can take your drinks outside and not worry about the pub’s interior, but not your best bet for the winter.

A totally unique and well-placed pub, this is practically the only place actually on Clapham Common. The décor is a mix of modern and old, but it works. I like the red lampshades in the back, and they have old scuppered tables here and outdoor seating. It’s a good place for a drink, albeit a little bit of a trek away from Clapham High Street, which gives it more a secluded feel, in a good way. It gets very busy in the summer and is cosy in the winter. Drinks are reasonable and the staff are really nice. They also serve food here and have a separate dining room, though I’ve never eaten here.

The Windmill is right on Clapham Common, great for a Sunday afternoon drink on a sunny day. The outside area is a reasonable size with tables and umbrellas, and the inside has several different rooms with various types of seating, including lots of sofas. The toilets are interesting, in that there always seems to be one that is out of order and another with no toilet paper. I am not sure this is intentional. My favorite thing about this place is the Sunday night quiz. I am not usually a huge fan of pub quizzes, as they tend to be heavy on music and sport questions, but the one at the Windmill offers a balance of knowledge and puzzles, for which you need a variety of skills. The staff will often help you with quiz answers if you happen to be at the bar when a question is asked, though don’t rely on this as a tactic, we were probably just fortunate that they happened to know the answer.

This is a Bed and Breakfast and Pub that can boast what not a lot of such business’s can — an impressive beer garden in the form of Clapham Common! Situated in the middle of sprawling green, this pub is quite expensive but its worth the extra few quid; especially in the summer months when you can take your plastic jugs of Pimms out onto the common and enjoy whilst basking in the sunshine. There is a huge wide-screen TV that shows sporting highlights — i particularly enjoyed watching the Wimbledon final here last summer. There is a food menu that serves decent standard pub-grub for around £8 a meal. Highly recommended in the summer.
