History

Established in 2004.

The Three Compasses is Hornsey’s oldest public house. There are known to have been at least three different buildings on this site, the current one dating back to 1896. The «Compasses» was originally a coaching inn and the New River passed through its grounds. Londoners would often visit the pub on a day out to enjoy the fishing, cricket and tea grounds. The current owners lovingly refurbished it in 2004 restoring it to it’s former glory and reclaiming it’s position in the heart of the community winning «Community Pub of the Year» in 2006, 2008 & 2010 at the Great British Pub Awards.

It has changed hands now and has become much more updated from the old man pub it once was (which I liked) but I think it’s a sign that this area will change much more drastically with cafes and superstores and flats. It looks very trendy now so good to see one like this in area.

Stopped by for a drink and a meal before an evening at Alexandra Palace. The food, a goat’s cheese pie, was very nice, and the service was friendly (although i suspect the barmaid’s first shift).
Not really my area, but good to know somewhere I can stop by in if I’m at the ally pally again

Worst pub in London! Scruffy barmaid and incompetent manager… They have without the doubt ruined this business. I’m local and would like to warn people specially women to think twice before going there. It’s not safe and attracts worse people in the area. Change the owner, get decent people behind the bar or close the place down! Disgusting service and level of incompetence can only make me say this is NOT a family pub or community pub! Racist and discriminating place that I have never ever had chance to see in London in last 15 years I lived here! Shameful!

This is a relaxing spot to grab pints before a show at Alexandra Palace. The real ale selection is top shelf, and their food was better than average. The staff were friendly, and there are lots of comfy seats.

Depends what you’re after. It’s not that lively, mainly populated by locals but as its fairly quiet it’s a good place to meet friends and have a good chat it’s likely you’ll get a seat and some quiet. Staff are friendly enough

I took an instand dislike to Three Compasses. It might have been the toothless drunk at the bar who decided, for unknown reasons, that I was the perfect audience for his harangue about the poor service he was receiving. Or perhaps it was the surly server, apparently working alone on a busy Saturday afternoon, who promptly demonstrated that those complaints were justified.
The front bar was fine but unexceptional. I did not like the cavern-​like back bar, which seemed a bit of a Chucky Cheese-​style game room for the 18 – 21 year old set. That said, there were quite a few people in the pub who seemed to be enjoying themselves, so the fact that it didn’t suit my taste doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t suit yours.
The selection of cask ales was pretty good, particularly if you are a fan of Redemption Brewing. The Redemption Pale Ale I had was fine. But I did not linger over it, and I will not return for another.

Music policy is a bit off, too loud, and they turn the lights down just as you get to the interesting article in the paper.
Beer is good and so is the food, but the reasons given above preclude our return. Sad.
Visited today for the first time in ages (10÷10÷10)
The music and lighting policy seems to have changed
for the better. Tring Colley’s Dog in top nick but the
Adnams Kolner was just reasonable, which was a bit
disappointing as I’d heard that this year’s vintage was
better than last year’s.
Picks up two extra stars.

Three Compasses is probably one of the best pubs in Hornsey. You can get a round of drinks (2) for under £8. They boast 15 wines by the glass and have a wide selection of ales, they even draw the clover on top of the Guinness, a treat you don’t see outside of Dublin, too often. There is even a guide as to which beers go best with each food i. e larger goes with fish and curry where as cider goes well with fatty meats such as pork. Three Compasses is a relaxed atmosphere with leather couches and chairs, pool tables, gambling machines, and loads of board games
(I would go for Uno personally). Monday night is quiz night and Thursday, they have a” for fun not for cash” Texas Hold’ em Poker tournament. Periodically they have Karaōke nights for charity. As far as the food goes their motto is «we don’t sell fast food we sell good food as fast as we can». It is a little on the expensive side £8.50 for fish and chips, £6 for a BLT, but in London you get what you pay for.

This very out of place pub is a really pleasant surprise considering the area that it’s in. It was refurbished a few years ago into a modern/​trendy bar, and they definitely did something right.
Despite being modern, the atmosphere inside is very warm. The staff are friendly, there’s a wide range of beer and you’re never left waiting for long at the bar.
You get a few locals that seem to think they own the place, but when ignored they seem to get bored of ‘playing up’ to the newbies.
