Yo! Sushi

I do enjoy sushi and YO has a much wider selection than Wasabi so I enjoy eating here more. The service is standard and quick so no real complaints here.

Popped in on a voucher deal on request of a friend and overall pretty unimpressed with the experience.
The staff were friendly and didn’t mind my over excitement at the button on the table that effectively pauses the restaurant to shout ‘Hello!’ and get the attention of the wait staff. Fun!
That was probably the best thing about Yo Sushi. Everything on the conveyor belt looked over-​refrigerated and, for want of a better word, limp!
I decided to play it safe with a chicken teriyaki which was so goopy and sickly I couldn’t finish it. My friends had a few bits off the conveyor belt and conceded it wasn’t as good as usual so perhaps we came in on an off day.
One thing I will mark them up on is the desserts — Chocolate Mochi (Japanese rice cakes balls filled with dark chocolate ganache) and Chocolate Ganache Cake (Layered chocolate mousse and ganache with a crunchy merigue centre)… yummmmm!
Lastly, before we left I used their bathrooms and was left wishing I hadn’t. I’m not sure what they’re putting in their food but let’s just say it was difficult to find a clean toilet. Seriously disgusting and dirty, all of them.
Step it up, Yo!

This particular Yo Sushi location wasn’t my favorite… the food was the same quality as other restaurants in the chain, but it seemed like they weren’t putting as much out as fast… so you spend more time sitting and waiting for something to go by than you do actually eating anything. Our service was very friendly though, I have to say that at least.
Gross: the bathrooms. Yes I know I’m always blabbering about bathrooms, but it’s a big deal to me – especially in an eating establishment. The bathroom is basically an open area with unisex toilet-​closets (no offense guys, but I hate sharing bathrooms with men — y’all get pee EVERYWHERE) and the only hand dryer available is one of those new-​fangled air-​blaster things of the type which has recently been shown in studies to blow bacteria all through the air. Right into the restaurant which is not separated from the bathroom by a closing door. Mmm.

As ever the food is reliably delicious. It gets busy but then it IS in clerkenwell. Would I recommend it? Of course. Hey and there’s a sale on till the 28^th.

Awful, I even saw a mouse here one lunch time. And after complaining to staff and head office (who never replied) I have never been back.

The whole Yo! Sushi concept has exploded in the past few years… sushi on a conveyor belt each dish a different color, a different price. It’s the new age version of a sushi boat place. I admit I prefer the sushi boats, something about boats floating down a river carrying sushi. Anyways I digress.
Yes, the sushi is just OK, but the place is clean and the occasional dish can surprise you and be quite tasty (the salmon skin roll and duck hand roll for instance). Staff is friendly and comes right away once you push the sushi call button. It’s also super fast to eat here, you want a 10 minute lunch… well there you go. It’s also a nice place if you are alone as you can sit at the counter and watch the fish go round and round and round.
I still can’t explain why they charge you over 1 pound for water though. Come on, it’s not like your sushi is cheap!

I pine for the sushi choice that I once had in Sydney. Unfortunately, since moving to London it seems that my choice in Clerkenwell has been limited to Tesco, Waitrose or Yo! Sushi.
While Yo! Sushi have a decent go at the popular sushi train format, it all feels a little commercial. The food is ok, but lacks some of the staples such as Inari. The service is ok, but feels a little impersonal.
However, the one thing that I will point out as outrageous (which is not specific to Yo! Sushi, but to any sushi in London) is the ridiculous prices! The only way I can afford to visit Yo! Sushi is either on Mondays, when everything is priced at £2.20, or when someone else is paying.
I yearn for the time when sushi becomes a little less yuppy scum and a little more normal.

I recently had a lovely time at this Yo! I went for my hour’s lunch break and thought the food was excellent, I really enjoyed our dishes (some were specially cooked for us and some we picked of the conveyor belt.)
I had been a few years previously and had a wicked time but this time reminded me of how fab it is in there.
There is a lovely upbeat atmosphere and the prices were quite reasonable.
I would definitely go again!

Given that this is the flagship Yo Sushi it’s odd that it’s the one that seems to produce the worst food and service.
It’s always really busy and the conveyor belt is full, but the staff seem quite forgetful about bringing you items you’ve ordered or just generally seeing that you’re after some attention.
Also the sashimi seems to be cut against the grain (technical sushi term there) and it leaves it a bit stringy.
Good place to go if you’re on your own for lunch.

Yo Sushi! (yes, complete with punctuation) is a chain, and each branch differs only in size and superficial layout.
As you might expect from the name, you will get sushi here. You go in, sit down, and a conveyor belt runs past you, and you choose your dishes off the belt (mostly — you can order special dishes, usually hot, by pressing the button in front of you, summoning a member of staff). Once you are through, the plates in front of you are counted and your bill tallied.
The sushi isn’t bad — I’ve had better at more traditional (i.e. actually run by Japanese people and often serving Japanese customers), but as fast food goes (and the preparation may take time, but the experience is generally very quick) it is good, and makes a change at lunchtime.
There is a big however, as it were. For what it is, it’s expensive. Dishes are colour coded, and priced according to the colour, up to £5.00 a dish for the grey dishes. You can easily spend £15 for lunch, and not feel you’ve eaten all that much. Furthermore, all drinks are charged for, even water from the taps in front of you (that really gets my goat).
I tend to avoid Yo Sushi! except when they have one of their reasonably frequent special offers (2 for 1 is typical), otherwise, it’s just too expensive for what is essentially a quick lunch.

Sushi that goes around on a conveyer belt, clever idea, I like the gimmick, but the standard of food needs to be as equally good as the gimmick and with Yo Sushi it is definitely not. I have eaten at this over priced «sushi» restaurant once and I won’t be going back. Why? Because its not sushi! When I think sushi, I think fresh fish on bed of fresh rice, seasoned by a professional chef to perfection, or something along those lines. Tiny little sample dishes rotate before you and you select which one you want, and the colour of the dish determines the price. The portions are so small, that this gets very expensive very quickly. My advice is to not waste your time, and go spend the money not on a gimmick, but on a real sushi chef.
