The Punchbowl Inn

Recently spent a very enjoyable two night stay at the Famous Punch Bowl.
The Inn is steeped in history and has loads of character. There were five in our party. Myself, my wife and our teenage son and daughter. My daughters friend was also with us. The teenage girls were a bit wary of the place because of the ghost stories associated with the Inn. Talk about vivid imaginations!
The restaurant was very good. The menu was reasonably priced and the food excellent. The bar was fine and served some real ales as well as the usual drinks. Trelawney and Tribute were the two i remember.
The rooms were comfortable and spacious.
The breakfasts were excellent too. A large jug of orange juice that was refilled as many times as desired. An assortment of cereals. As much tea and coffee as you wanted. Offers of additional trays of toast and on top of all that a full cooked English breakfast. The charge for b and b was twenty pounds per person per night. In my opinion this represented exceptional value for money.
There are areas of the inn that could do with attention. The extensive roof top balconies could do with a lick of paint and perhaps a power wash.
The connecting hallway corridors in the Inn were a tad untidy.
The impression i was left with overall was that the owner was trying to get as much done with as little staff as possible. This is not meant as a great criticism because it must be very difficult to make the Inn a viable proposition given the small local population and a lack of visitors in the non summer months.
Mention must be made of Julie the landlady. She was a very personable and pleasant individual who worked her socks off for the guests.
With a bit more investment this would easily be a five out of five review.
Even as is the Punch Bowl is well worth a visit. It has real genuine character.

we have just visited this pub the landlady was very nice the food was o k but the place could do with a good clean ! the toilet smelt, the restaurant needs a good clean, wont be going back

We were first made aware of the Punchbowl Inn when we first moved to Kingsbridge by a close friend of ours. After a few weeks when we’d settled into our new home we ventured to find the pub to see what it was like. The only downside to the place was finding it, it’s a little tucked away but it’s really worth the trip!
The pub looks old fashioned from outside, sitting low against the hill with the church opposite and an ample car park next to that. Upon entering the pub we were greeted by a long stone floored hall way with the restaurant off to the left and the bar off to the right. The bar is warm and welcoming with an open fire and a good selection of ales always on offer. It’s a treat to spend a cold damp day in there warm by the fire. Julie the land lady is always welcoming and plays the role of host very well making even non locals feel welcome.
The main draw though is the food which is quite frankly out of this world. Using local and seasonal ingredients, Steve, the chef creates masterpieces from the kitchen ranging from stuffed chicken breast, to his home made pâté, to some of the best steaks I’ve ever had. The food is reasonably priced and I don’t think I’ve ever left the place hungry in the slightest, managing 3 courses is a real challenge, one I’ve only managed once as the portions are excellent.
We’ve been back numerous times since then, including for our wedding reception where we were treated like royalty for the day. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for the best pub in Cornwall, it would take a lot to beat this place!
