Very average takeaway in a good location. Nicked some of my mate’s chips and can confirm they were alright. He said the chicken hit the spot as he was starving and needed to have something solid before having another pint. I’d come back in the same situation.

It may have been two years since the first and only time I visited this place but I remember it well. I was really desperate for something to eat and drink, with a 15 minute lunch break, and Rustica was closed. I wandered in and asked for a chicken burger with fries and a can of diet coke. The can cover was covered in a sticky gloop so I asked them to swap it for another but they were all covered in the same sticky gloop that the first can was covered in. The man who served me, wiped the can with the same cloth he wiped the sides down with and handed it to me. Needless to say, I didn’t open it. When I received the chicken burger and fries, they looked respectable on the outside. I opened the polystyrene tub and started eating the fries as I walked back to work, until I found a browned chewing gum wrapper at the bottom of the tub. Needless to say it went straight in the bin — I would have taken it back if I hadn’t been due back at work.

I went to Fresh Bites last night with a friend after coming back from the M.E.N arena feeling a bit hungry. Not knowing Manchester very well, we asked a local cab driver to drop us off near the hotel we were staying at for the night. Fresh bites was the first takeaway place we came across so we decided to go in and grab a bite to eat. We both ordered fried chicken & Chips & sat down to eat it. We tucked in & discovered, to our horror, that the chicken pieces were pink underneath the crispy coating. Also we found that the chicken looked a bit green round the edges and bits of the meat were also hard. Absolutely disgusting! It looked as if it was really poor quality chicken to say the least, as well as being majory undercooked(potential salmonella poisioning risk). I understand that a lot of takeaway places use poor quality meats but this took the Mick! We did let the chap at the counter know that the chicken was raw & even opened up the chicken pieces to show him how pink they were. He seemed to agree that they were raw but just laughed & did not even offer to refund us despite the fact that we had paid for food that we were unable to eat because of their carelessness, so still went hungry! I don’t understand how this place is still open if they are serving undercooked & potentially very dangerous food, they need to be reported to food standards & closed down. I would advise who has never visited here before, if you go to Manchester & are looking for a takeaway, DONOTGOTOFRESHBITES!!!

There are some great lunchtime offers here but little in the way of ‘fresh bites’, just the usual selection of pizzas, burgers and freeze-dried chips along with some pretty decent sandwiches(although nothing compared to bready delights of three-doors-down Rustica sandwich shop). Of a night it dispenses mid-priced fast food of a mid-level quality to the stopouts trickling from nearby Mint Lounge, Dry Bar and Night & Day. In its favour is a two pronged fork of ingeniousness; on one long metal pointy bit(this metaphor is quickly running out of control) is the ‘baked bean special’, featuring lovely, lovely beanz, and on the other spiky arm is the option of a 7inch pizza, which is really all you need when it’s that late at night — any bigger and most of it would just end up in the bin or on your bedroom floor.

Fresh Bites is a take away for the night time crowd. No it isn’t actually. I walked past it OPEN one time walking through the Northern Quarter. It was not good. The food here is not amazing and I can tell when I’ve had way too many a drinks. It’s always quite frantic trying to order food as queues are formed and ignored and people’s orders get lost amongst the chaos. Mint Lounges like me come here because Burger King is that bit further and chips and garlic sauce is desired by crazy S who insists they’re amazing. If you’re just waiting for a taxi you can wait in the warmth with a few seats by the window and get the drunken random conversation rolling. Fresh bites must make a mint either way. Busy busy busy.

Fresh Bites is my favourite late night takeaway in Manchester. It also seems to open a lot later than many other places. Many a time my friend and I have made a late night dash to this Oldham Street eatery to satisfy our junk food cravings. The kebabs are fresh and extremely tasty and the portions, while not the biggest, are fairly generous with a good amount of salad. They also offer a wide selection of pizzas, garlic bread, fried chicken and numerous other fried delights.
