This place divides me a bit. I went there for a treat for my dads birthday a year or so ago. Its got some really big pros but unfortunately some significant cons too. For that reason I will structure the review into two sections, beginning with the plus points. The pros: –Its located on King Street in an excellent central location. –The décor is gorgeous and modern with a lovely little bar in front of a spacious smart restaurant. –The food is English traditional with a difference, its made posh. Stew and Dumplings for instance, features a steak-style piece of meat sitting atop a potato and doughy dumpling in a tower. Fish and Chips constitutes a fillet of prime fish balanced attractively on top of a tower of chips arranged something like the children’s game Jenga. This makes it pretty fun. –The taste of the food is remarkable and faultless, all perfectly cooked from quality ingredients. –Excellent service. Now the significant cons: –Its incredibly expensive unless you come for a lunch deal or something like that, in which case you miss the fun of the bustling restaurant and bar. If you want to go you have to be prepared to splash out and treat yourself, and the nicer the food and drinks you have, the more its gonna cost. –The portion size! Despite the high quality and impeccable presentation, the portions just aren’t big enough. I am a big lad so for me the main would have made a good starter. Even the female members of my family(who are quite small as well) complained that though it was nice, they just weren’t full. For me not quite good enough considering the prices. It’s a shame these things let Room down because its got the potential to be one of the best places in Manchester.

So Room, it’s one of those places that you think is just the sort of place for an after work drink, you’d never really bother venturing in there for the night. Well you’re missing out. You’re slightly intimidated as you step inside and there’s a receptionist sat behind the desk, you’re thinking am I allowed in? Is this members only? However, they usher you in and greet you, offer to take your coats and send you upstairs. You make your way into the bar which is gorgeously decorated, kind of like a living room straight off one of those home improvements shows! The bartender is as welcoming as the receptionist downstairs and hands you a drinks menu… which is phenomenal! All fancy cocktails and a fantastic wine list to match too! The bartender clearly knew everything on the menu back to front but wasn’t one of those stuck-up guys you come across so often in other places, he made us feel completely at ease. We actually only popped in for a drink but we then saw some food going out to a table, it looked amazing so we thought we’d have a quick bite, it would have been rude not to! The food… you have to experience this for yourself. The menu is a range of classical dishes but all with a bit of a twist. Everything sounds good! And it was, the presentation was really something else but the food itself was just perfect. And the prices weren’t too bad either! All in all, a lovely little hideaway and somewhere I can’t wait to go back to.
