The Razors Edge

After leaving my hair to grow for weeks on end — even considering growing it out at one point — I realised I had to take action. My favourite stylist at Denny has moved on to bigger and better (and more expensive) pastures, so what’s a girl to do?
I booked in to Razors Edge for a Saturday and headed down for my appointment. Unfortunately, my stylist was running 30 – 45 minutes late. If they can text to remind you about your appointment, can’t they do the same for any delays? Although I enjoyed the time to wander around town, I was there for my hair!
The overall experience was much the same as last time. Lots of chatting between stylists, plenty of regulars, and then those of us who are between exploring new places and actually just mourning the loss of our last favourite.
I was happy with the overall cut, though I did have to trim a certain section myself — not easy– due to the difference in the way I style my hair and the way she parted it on the day.
The price continues to be a real stickler for me and I’ll continue my search for the perfect balance between amazing hair and cheap cheap prices.

Sophie my fellow Unilocaler is right, I’ve been to a few of these city centre hairdresser’s and this Razors Edge (no apostrophe please) is one of the finest. Its décor is sleek and sexy, all huge white basins, black chairs and lots of steel. This is a salon for the younger generation not a blue rinse in sight. House music pumps out while the staff (and there are a lot of them) attend to your every need.
My stylist was Ivana, a petite, Italian sport’s fanatic who is the creative director of the salon. Apart from being amazing at her job, Ivana always throws in a complimentary treatment such as a nourishing hydrating treatment. A trim and blow dry is priced at £35 which given Razors Edge’s central location, is a good price. Customers are treated like princes and princesses as they sit and get pampered whist partaking in the endless offerings of tea, coffee and even hot chocolate. The extremely accommodating staff will even pop out to the shop for your special requests.
It is vital to book here and appointments are usually arranged for on the hour or twenty past the hour. I had to wait only five minutes as the salon is incredibly busy and has to run like clockwork, however, you do not feel rushed. Razors Edge is a long established chain and there are a couple of others in Manchester City Centre but this branch is my favourite by far. There are discounts for children and students so no-​one is forgotten. On My first visit, they presented me with a loyalty card and after ten appointments I will receive my regular cut or trim for free.
This is a large hairdressers with basins located on the ground floor and stylists working in the basement alongside resident beauty therapist, Rose who performs threading and applies gel and acrylic nails. There are also two verticle sunbeds to complete your beauty régime and you leave this establishment tanned, manicured and groomed to perfection. I loved my «do» and laughed at Ivana’s repertoire which was far more entertaining than the usually banal chat you sometimes get at the hairdressers (thank you Ivana for not mentioning the weather even once).

God, I hate going to the hairdressers — usually.
I have had long, curly dark brown hair for a while now (say, ten years) and they always cut it too short. Once when I ‘modelled’ for a branch of Vidal Sassoon they somehow managed to make me look middle aged. Moi, who regularly gets ID’d for paracetemol.
But at Razor’s Edge, those few extra pennies really do seem to go a long way. The staff treat you like minor royalty; you know where you are and who is looking after you at all times and they treat you like an individual. I have been a few times and one that sticks out is when I went for a blow dry before a birthday party. My birthday party. We all know how important it is to look good when you are the one throwing the bash.
So, my hair stylist was funny and chatty. Quite a lot of naughty talk actually about his wife, when I thought that he was gay — mystery. He recommended dying my hair a shade darker and showed me where it needed to be cut next time and why. My hair stayed perfect for most of the night which is more than I can say for other occasions and other hairdressers…
Razor’s Edge is without a doubt where I’m going for my next hair appointment. If only I was a student as they do a discount Monday to Thursday.

Razors Edge has a few branches dotted around Manchester. I have been a few times and I have found the cuts to be good, not spectacular, and the general service is what you would expect of a Hairdressers; cups of teas and coffee etc.
My problem with Razors Edge is that prices start at £25 but this for a new/​junior stylist and then there are various senior members of staff who cost more and it’s difficult to say no to a senior stylist cutting your hair. Additionally, I found that prices vary if you have long hair, and they also try to push a conditioning treatment.
There’s nothing I hate more than going to a hairdressers, than not knowing how much I will be charged in the end because of add-​ons.
This is a good place to go if you want a good standard cut and generally good customer service.

Having tried many different hair salons, I always find myself returning to this one, because of the quality of service and cut that I always recieve.
Prices range from around £25, but, in my experience, it’s worth spending an extra tenner to have a senior stylist do your hair.
This is the largest of four Razors Edge salons in Manchester. All offer student discounts, with the Oxford Raod branch giving a whopping 25% off.
