You could easily miss this hidden gem as it is off of the pedestrianized part in a little shopping centre. They do have a sign about local brews where the entrance to the shopping centre is. I walked by the first time because it did not look like anything special, but on the way back, I thought a peek inside would not hurt, especially if they have nice local ales. When I walked in, I was greeted warmly and asked if he could help. I said that I wanted to browse the local ales they had advertised outside. So he pointed me to the area and began to tell me about some of them. He told me about the ale that is brewed with some of the whey from Stilton Cheese… and where the breweries of some of the other ales were from. I have to say, I was rather impressed with how much he knew about the ales and how willing he was to share the information. I did ask if there was a special where you could mix and match ales for a deal and he said that they used to do that, but they do not anymore… which was the only downside for me. He did ask me if I was American… my accent gave it away! And then asked if I was visiting and I told him I was just in Melton for the afternoon, but I live down the road outside of Grantham. Then he proceeded to tell me that one of the ales I had purchased was actually brewed in Grantham and that the brewery doesn’t brew a wide variety. I found him really helpful and friendly, not overbearing or pushy and greatly appreciated his help with the ales! I also didn’t think that the prices for the ales was too expensive(4 ales for £9…including the Stilton one), but then again they are from local breweries and I like to think I am helping the local economy!
