The Gate

Only Newcastle could house a place like the Gate. Where else in the UK would a shopping mall for pubs, bars and a casino be considered necessary? I can’t speak for other countries, but when it comes to the UK traditionally people have shops in shopping malls. Newcastle is a city of tradition, but that tradition is the one of going out on a Friday or Saturday night and getting twatted at the Gate before heading to Sam Jacks (do they still do the Dentist’s Chair?) or Sinners then on into the Bigmarket.
The prices are cheap for food and certain types of booze, but just don’t ask for anything fancy. This is a place where a slice of lemon in a G&T is considered classy.
Try playing the Stag Night Saturday Shots game — take a shot for ever stag/​hen do you see on your night out. (Always have one person stay sober to call the ambulance.)
The loos are fine, just don’t go in them after midnight, unless you want to see some lads and lasses ‘having fun’.
I’m a Geordie by birth so I can get away with slagging this place off. I just wish it’d been around when I was growing up so I didn’t have to walk so far over town.

The casino here is the worst casino I’ve ever been to. The floor is sticky, the lights are garish and the staff are extremely rude. The bouncers especially are very antagonistic and rude. When I visited with my friends during daylight hours, a couple of my friends were shouted at by the bouncers on the Stowell Street side of the casino for attempting to enter before their approval although the door was open and the bouncers seemed indifferent as we began to enter. The experience of dealing with the bouncers made the whole experience unnerving and tainted our whole time there. The staff seem very paranoid and are always staring at the clientele as if they are the enemy. Such a horrible place. They should think about replacing their bouncers on Stowell Street if they don’t want to lose more business, I’d never return from my experience with this place.

I come here mainly for the Cinema but I have been in the casino, a few bars & T.G.I. Friday’s XD

Good for food and drinking but no shops in here. All said though its a decent place for the beer :)

Selection of bars, half decent cinema with an ice-​cream bar. Very, very, very, very busy at week ends.

The best cinema in Newcastle, the best casino in Newcastle and some pretty decent bars to boot. Oh and the choice of restaurants is exceptional, if not expensive. I really don’t understand where a lot of the negative reviews are coming from, guess they just had a bad night out — a quintessential visit for all Newcastle tourists and locals.

It was one of the first sights recommended to us by the hostel staff upon our arrival. To our disappointment the building was rather small, something close to Vue cinema in Edinburgh, full of restaurants and bars on the ground floor and a cinema on the top floor. What I liked most were the friendly faces of the locals who tried to chat us while we were passing by.

The Gate has good cinema which is quite expensive if you go at peak times. There is also a number of bars and restaurants in the complex such as Pizza Hut, Ask
It is quite a modern building but from the outside, it does look very dark inside it.
This place isn’t the cheapest option for a night out but it isn’t the worst.

Somewhat bleak trip up to the cinema particularly at night as you travel through the bars area of the gate complex.
Parking good for a central venue.
Not much of an individual aspect to this cinema otherwise

I’ve been to The Gate in Newcastle a few times, but nothing has really sottd out for me. At weekends they tend to get a lot of younger people in, whose main priority is to get drunk and have a laugh. while this is ok by me, it’s not really what i’m looking for.
The Cinema isn’t the bad though. it has an amazing 12 screens and they always have the latest films.
They also have a very wide selection of different restaurants to eat in including Ask, Frankie and Bennys, nandos, Pizza Hut and TGI Fridays, so something for everybody!

I really liked the Gate, have visited a couple of times when visiting Newcastle would be brilliant for a catch up with friends as they have a variety of bars, restaurants, cinemas and clubs. Looks a bit like a shopping centre without shops. Lots of variety so you should be able to find somewhere you like.

It has a good cinema at the top several nice resteraunts on the first floor the best of which is the spice cube and some not so fab generic pubs at the bottom where the want to be look at me crowd hang out
It has the players sports bar so does get some of the drunken fans but every pub does on a match day
It also has Aspers a once slightly more exclusive club now offering free membership to try and get people in
A once great club knocked down and turned into an it place
Okay to go to for a trip to the pictures and a quick meal but much better places to drink on a night out

The Gate is a good complex, There are plenty of places to eat and drink, If the weather is not so good in the summer or in the cold winter months you can start and end your evening here, there’s a club and a casino if you fancy trying your luck. Don’t want to eat and drink all day no problem there’s also a cinema.

Very upmarket indoor area, which has a variety of restaurants and pubs. As well as the big cinema upstairs. Its very modern inside and easy to travel too. It even has a nightclub which is pretty good with a good range of music, they have a weird style on the toilets through which are connected to male and female. Pricey in most of the places but you can certainly have a fun night out, they have a weatherspoons place downstairs on the ground floor, if you want a good price.

The Gate is a large cinema and eating complex in Newcastle. It is fairly new and (apparentely) upmarket, though I beg to differ on the latter.
I have visited the Gate both during the day and also in the evening I would definitely not visit again in the evening and especially not on Match days as there are often drunks and undesirables lurking outside. Through the day the atmosphere is marginally better and it tends not to be so packed with the people. I don’t to venture into most of the eateries due to the price; however, I’m partial to Pizza Hut once in a while, which is child-​friendly and fairly good value in comparison with the other restaurants in there.
I think that when you consider the entry price of most things at The Gate, you would get much better value and also a better overall experience if you go elsewhere in Newcastle. You are made to pay a premium price for the upkeep of a rather modern, impersonal complex. It’s not the sort of place that really appeals to me but I guess there must be a market for it as it always seems to be full of people when I have been!

This is a venue which appeals to a range of people for a night out. The top floor has a hugh Empire Cimema, it shows all the new movie’s and often has many screenings of them to try and contol the crowds. The prices for food are expensive but they do some meal deals on Nacho’s/drinks etc. The que’s for tickets ar managed well as you can now buy your cinema tickets from any of the food outlets as well as the main box office.
The 2^nd floor has a range of resturants including Pizza Hut, Ask, Wok Maina (which is getting very expensive), Frankie & Benys and Spice. There is also Aspers Casino, its free to join and you can join there and then if you take your driving licence with you.
The Ground floor is more about the drinking and partying. Its got a range of pubs, with Mood opening till 1am. There’s also Lloyds bar which is always good to start the night off with cheep drinks and Bannatynes has good happy hours on through the day.
The best thing is its all undercover and heated, so once your inside you can easily spend the whole night there and not let the british weather spoil your night out

This place opened a few years ago and i thought it was great. As the years have went on it has turned into chav central. During day it may be worth a visit to one of the fastfood/​restaraunt places they have like nandos, pizza hut, TGI’s or to go watch a movie at the cinema.
But as soon as night time arrives, try and stay clear, the bars used to be ok but now the pubs which are Beyond, Moot and Players have now been turned into an extension of the Bigg Market, and trust me thats not a good thing.
If you do find yourself there enjoying a drink please be ready to be greeted by doorman breaking up fights and stag nights marching about screaming lol, well this is what I found last time I wentnot good!

This place gives a fantastic view over the city and is in a great location, being only a short walk from both the Haymarket Metro/​bus stations and the Eldon Square bus station. There is also a Taxi rank outside and underground car parking (it’s about 8 minutes from Newcastle Central Station).
The first floor mainly comprises various modern and expensive places to drink alcohol (there are many cheaper and nicer pubs and bars within easy waling distance).
The second floor accomodates a Pizza Hut, Frankie & Benny’s, a nice Indian restaurant and Nando’s; as well as Aspers casino (member’s only, quite nice and not difficult to join).
The (very high!) third floor is home to a ten-​screen cinema, offering the usual overpriced natchos, hotdogs and ice cream. The cinema always has a great selection of films showing, with numerous screenings throughout the day (though if you want art or foreign movies the Tyneside Cinema is a better bet).
This is worth visiting just for the view, though overall it is too modern, homogenized and overpriced to be in any way indicative of the city of Newcastle. Nevertheless. it is an impressive piece of architecture.

Don’t go if you’re scared of heights. You can see right over the city — but have to go up escalators, lifts, or many flights of stairs to reach anywhere.
Good location — short walk from Haymarket Metro/​bus statio. Taxi rank right outside. Underground car park.
First commercial floor: many chain bars (Llyods, Players) etc and the only-go-if-you’re-over-25-and-not-wearing-trainers Mood club.
Second floor: the eateries, mmm! Cheap chains: Frankie & Benny’s, Pizza Hut, Nando’s and I’m sure there’s an Indians.(?) Aspers casino is up here and it’s member’s only but one of the nicest in Newcastle.
Third, last, and highest floor: the ten-​screen cinema. Amazing.
Well worth a visit, but don’t come out of the cinema on a Saturday night expecting to have a quiet drink in the bars. Error.

Ok, that’s really all the positive things I can say about the Gate. To get a really good idea of as to what it is all about, go to the cinema on the top floor on a Saturday night, and when you come out, take a slow amble down the escalators and observe the species known as Chavious Amoebius in action. As the name implies, a single celled organism, and it’s Burberry coloured. Actually, it’s not THAT bad, but it’s a gnat’s eyelash away. Bigg Market with a roof. Chain restaurants for fast food and slow imagination.
