Big store on two floors. Lots of choice. Convenient location in the pedestrian precinct.

This rather large branch of WH Smiths is on Northumberland Street, near to Burger King. It’s spread out over two floors and has pretty much everything you’d expect from a large stationers. Books, magazines, daily newspapers ect.
There are some lovely stationery ranges and accessories.
Upstairs now houses the main post office for Newcastle.
They have a wide range of cds/​dvds but don’t expect anything out of the ordinary. They have a good selection of books too but here again if it’s something different your’e after you’ll probably have to order. I’ve found this process can take anything from a week to two months.
All in all a good store but it’s not always the cheapest unless you take advantage of the offers available at the time.
My gripe with this store is the staff, who only seem to be there because they have to. Anything but friendly.

A large store spread out over two floors. Sells a range of products including books, magazines, CD’S, DVD’s, and stationary. The products range in price and can be cheap but can also be quite expensive. They often have good offers on for books, and sell some very pretty hand made stationary. The sweets are also very cheap. Finally they hold a huge range of magazines from every genre so its a great place to get magazines of a particular genre.

A massive smiths, they have a great selection of mags and books. Upstairs is just as big as downstairs and has dvds, music cds, computer stuff, stationery I love my stationery. Staff are really nice not many of them but are good when you catch one. Fast service as there is always a lot of people on the tills. Hand y for any magazines you could want.

A large branch of the stationary store WH Smith. Situated outside of Eldon Square but near the bottom of Northumberland street making it very easy to access. WH Smith is also the home to central Newcastles Post Office which is based on the 2^nd floor. Sadly the queue is always huge so I usually avoid it and go to the one in Byker. The store is big and open making everything easy to find. However perhaps because it is in central Newcastle the queues at the cash desk are always long.

This good-​sized store is conveniently located on Northumberland Street. It’s bright but always seems crowded and noisy. There’s a large selection of newspapers and magazines as well as up to date books, audiovisual items, games, stationery and lots of gift items.
The staff weren’t terribly helpful today when I was in shopping, I’m afraid, hence the 2 star review. While paying, the buy-​one-​get-​one-​half-​price offer on my books didn’t get deducted automatically at the till; when I queried the total cost I got the deduction but the distinct impression that I was being a nuisance. Mistakes happen but a simple apology and assurance that the advertised offer would be honoured would have been good customer service.
Smiths have also fallen into my bad books because of their habit of trying to sell you additional items at the till — if I wanted the Chocolate Orange I would have picked it up without prompting! I don’t like this sales technique which seems to have become more common in the last year.

I would say the staff are never really friendly nor do they smile!
They also charge you 1p for a bag!
Its better than the one at the train station though. How can the justify charging an extra 20% because of the shops location.
I do buy magazines from here regualarly though.

This is a large W.H. Smith store located off Newcastle’s main shopping street. There is a large downstairs with various sections such as magazines, stationary and educational supplies.
In the upstairs area there is now a large post office which is usually extremely busy. The prices charged are usual W.H. Smith prices so there usually isn’t any bargains to be had.

i used to go to smiths all the time but now rarely go there. the offers on the cds used to be very good but this is a shop far more geared towards books. i don’t read much though and for magazines i normally just go to a newsagent.

Large store with much to choose from. Staff are rather blunt and unhelpful though and in my last visit managed to loose several quid off a giftcard I used! Pricier than many similar stores nearby.

A pretty big shop which is spread over two floors specialises in stationery and books. Similar to Paperchase, all the top brands of the stationery world can be found here. From pink plastic Play Boy pretty things to posh Parker pens, there seems to be a brand of stationery marketed at everyone. ‘Everyone’ does not include the people who want cheap and plain. The shop sells their own brand at a lower cost than most names but don’t expect bargains. The Book section is on the ground floor at the back. Best sellers are what most people would shop for here but they can order in at your request. Last time I tried this I was told it could take months so I decided to shop elsewhere. This shop has the largest paper and magazine section I’ve seen and seems to go on forever. Drinks, sweets and other sugary treats are near the tills and DVDs/​Games/​CDs are upstairs. Most people call it Smiths since it’s easier and sounds less pretentious. It’s still a shop that tries to set its own standards. Not for cheap skates.
