Traditional family run free house based in Norwich city centre. Dating back to at least 1841, this beautiful and historic pub trades with two names. Having always been trading as The Gardeners Arms, events of Jun e 1895, gave the pub the gruesome nickname of the Murderers, when the landladies daughter Millie, was murdered by her estranged husband Frank Miles.
Now, possibly the last free house in Norwich city centre, The Murderers, is a haven for pub lovers… great home cooked food, voted the regions best sports pub in the Great British awards 2011, listed in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide, and appear in the Famous Grouse 100, list of the most historic pubs in the UK…
Well worth a visit!
History
Established in 1841.
Millie Miles was married to Frank in 1893, but following arguments and money worries, Millie separated from Frank, moving back into her mothers public house, the Gardeners Arms. Frank still felt strongly towards Millie, and bought her clothes and gifts to woo her back. However, Millie was seen by Frank going into the pub with another man… throwing Frank into a rage. He threatened Millie, telling her that he would «do for you in the morning»
Frank was true to his word, returning in the morning and attacked Millie with a hammer… she died 2 days later from her injuries.
Frank Miles was tried and convicted but his death sentence was commuted to life in prison, withnthe judge stating that Frank had been ‘provoked’
Frank died in Parkhurst prison in May 1905, aged 37
