The canalside nature reserve is a hidden treasure trove of nature amongst the buildings of Oxford. It’s near to Port Meadow and the residential area near there, but is worth visiting in its own right if you happen to be jogging or walking your dog along the canal. There are little signs explaining what wildlife you might be able to see, and it’s great just to walk quietly through and see what you can spot. There are lots of native birds, such as cuckoos, woodpigeons, robins, blue-tits and wagtails; and all manner of other wildlife, such as mice, foxes, badgers and squirrels, although you’re unlikely to see the nocturnal ones unless you go at night. Take your children along to see what wildlife’s really about, or go alone to escape from the rush of everyday life.
