Alfred’s Bar & Grill

This restaurant needs a good clean. The food is expensive and not worth it. The staff are horrible and are prepared to argue with you if unhappy with your meal. I have visited here on many occasions hoping it will get better but have now given up. Will stick to the Caesars arms!

I think it’s time to call the health inspector the place smells of urine as for the service no one can be bothered.
I did speak to a few friends who said that on a Friday and Saturday the males use the dance floor corner to urinate instead of the toilet (LOVELY)
I suggest you stay away until the place is fumigated!

We have a drink most weekends at Alfreds and decided to visit the restaurant for a family Birthday celebration at the end of May 2010. The service was awful! We had to stop the waitress from removing the starters before diners had finished and despite the fact that one diner was eating toast and pâté the waitress retorted «well I didn’t see any knives and forks moving». I dont expect to be challenged as to whether we have finished our meals or not. Additionally when I requested a specific drink I was told «its not served up here but you can go downstairs and get one for yourself if you like». The waitressess did not understand how to serve people properly; the attitide of one in particular was extrememly distressing to all members of the party and their manners were terrible. We were a table of six and whilst a couple of meals were very nice, two were mediocre and two were very poor. Presentation was poor and the order was incorrect. Starters were rushed as the mains were ready. One guest ordered Steak and received a small, blackened Steak and four discoloured new potatoes. That was the extent of it. Sauces were slapped on the plates without finesse or courtesy. We ate here a year or so ago and it was a pleasant experience but never again. I’ve heard other similar reports since discussing our visit. The venue «bigs» itself up for being a bit «special» but it can’t cut it in reality yet charges inflated prices for average (in some cases — inedible in others) food and staff with the attitude and serving ability of a snake — never again!

Fantastic! I love Alfreds Bar and Grill. Been here many many times, and at all days of the week.
Weekdays are generally quieter, so you can have a nice night without it being loud.
Weekends are abit louder, but this is due to the Bar on the ground floor, which still doesnt really interupt any conversations you’d have in the restaurant.
Fridays and Saturdays there is also a disco down stairs, but again not intrusive to your meal.
Which leads me onto the Food.
Which I can only described as Amazing! From the Steaks, to the Fish every meal i’ve had has always been spot on.
Then there’s the Special’s Board, of which my favourite is the Osterich with Pepper sauce! If the special says it comes with port sauce, ask for pepper instead.
There is always a variety on the specials board. (Too much I think as I’m still waiting for beef Wellinton to come back on there!)
The Staff are by far the best I’ve ever come accross in this country. Very polite, and always very very helpful.
This place is ideal for Family meals, Nights out with Friends or even dates.
The price is comparitive to the service. In my view it isnt expensive, for the food and service you get.
But you wont get a meal for £5. Normally its about £40 for 2 people, including drinks and after’s. (I recommend the Pancakes.)
The food is all freshly cooked, and comes with a choice of potato sides.
I’m alrady booked to go back again!

Lovely food here I’ve eaten here a few times and never had a complaint. Alfreds is also a great place for a night out. They play a good mix of new and old. Always a great atmosphere with no trouble!

This restaurant does really good food, its more up market than most restaurants in ponty. On the weekend evenings it turns into more of a night club. Its a good night though if your into that sort of thing.

Very good quality food, excellent steaks and very nice deco. Restaurant up stairs and pub/​wine bar downstairs. Not many venues like this in Pontypridd. Good lunch time menu.
Had a great xmas party with work last year. Food good and really good service. Good atmosphere downstars too but can get busy and weekends. Remember to book restaurant.

this is a very high class restuarant where all the food is displayed so the customer can choose which cut of meat or fish they require. it is quite expensive but the food and surroundings are worth it

Alfreds is located in Pontypridds town centre, it has a great selection of food and wine. Although it is quite expensive, the setting more than makes up for this as it is very tastefully decorated. They also offer a lunch time menu making it ideal to rest your feet after too much shopping.

Alfreds is one of the better bar’s in ponty. Its slightly more up market and therefore attracts a decent bunch of people. Fridays and Saturdays the ‘club’ part always gets a fairly decent turn out. The food is always lovely. Id recommend alfreds for a special occasion or celebration.

I am very disappointed in the management and security staff at Alfred’s bar & grill. On Friday 18^th July 2008, I was having a quiet drink in the bar area downstairs with my friend. A female customer whom I did not know, pushed me off a bar stool from the back. Rather than start a confrontation, I seeked help from the bouncers and manageress on duty. Nothing was done! I was fobbed off even though I gave a full description and told them where the female was sitting. I fealt it best to leave and it ruined an other wise lovely evening.

A.A.Gill woke up in a sweat. He had been dreaming that he was lost in the Welsh Valleys, surrounded by the people he loathed, with nowhere to eat except endless chippies, kebab houses and chinese take-​aways. But he didn’t know about Alfreds.
Alfred’s looms out of the heart of Pontypridd’s market area, an oasis in a desert of unexceptional shops, caffs, and tawdry van traders. It is a roomy conversion of an old Bank building, expensively refurbished (with a sizeable grant from the EEC, I’m told) and set over two floors, the design being based on Modernist Manhattan, with exposed brick, steel beams, strip-​oak flooring and bespoke contemporary artwork. A large atrium with a glass balcony looks over a sofa lounge and fireplace. Downstairs you will find a 20 metre bar, with light meals and tapas available; upstairs, a spacious twin-​roomed restaurant, with food counter and openplan kitchen centrally placed.
It was opened in late Summer 2004 and named after Alfred John who was the founder of Pontypridd Market. A large photographic print of this gentleman dominates the atrium. And it has survived, proof that a good restaurant can flourish anywhere.
There is a Lunch Menu with a dozen choices running out at around £10 for two courses. A la carte is always available with some twenty staple choices and a changing daily Specials Board. Most of the food is on display in the refrigerated counter, where you can choose your piece of meat or fish, and even specify how you want it cooked. A help-​yourself salad table and cheese selection lies alongside. A comprehensive Wine List gives you the opportunity to enjoy a glass or two at very reasonable prices, or push the boat out with a Grand Cru Classe Bordeaux.
The service would melt even Gill’s heart. The waiting staff consists of homely Welsh mother figures who fuss you to death, some intellectuals from the nearby University of Glamorgan, and a selection of internationals, including at today’s count a Brazilian supermodel, a delightful Spanish Manuel type chappie, and a pair of Polish elopees. What’s better is that your table is open season for all of them — no demarcation here — so one by one they all come past to see how you are doing. Food can go cold as you engage in lively conversation with each of them.
On Fridays and Saturdays the bar downstairs morphs into a nightclub with DJ’s and doormen, and genteel diners descending after a fine meal can have a bit of a shock as the Ponty Mob get down and dirty on the dancefloor.
It fails to get 5 stars on one account. The owner, Nick John (same family as the eponymous Alfred), slinks around from time to time but looks straight through his guests and has never spoken to me in 4 years of custom. At least he doesn’t foist himself on you. And his staff more than make up for him.
