Mama Dumplings

This restaurant received a ONE Food Hygiene Rating (Major Improvement Necessary) rating by the Food Standards Agency on the 17.11.11 which came to me as no surprise as I had suffered the worst case of food poisoning there in May 2010 and was laid out for a whole week! I stopped going to the restaurant after that and only went back recently to have my favourite roast duck noodle dish and spoke to the manager there about their ‘coveted award’. She was very disturbed by the rating and told me that things were going to improve significantly as a re-​inspection was due. Well, things have certainly improved and during the re-​inspection on the 04.01.12, the restaurant was awarded a THREE Food Hygiene Rating (Generally Satisfactory). While the food and ambience there is generally good, the high turnover of Malaysian cooks in the kitchen leads to dishes that vary quite significantly in taste. Being a customer there for years, it has been evident in the regular dishes that I order. At least they have been pro-​active about improving, which they have. So, best of luck. I would recommend the restaurant for good quality food at reasonable prices.

I may be a bit biased since I’ve just moved to Sutton from Central London and pretty much all food in London is divine but… Mama Dumplings is alright. It’s not «Oh my god that was a disgusting; I’m never coming back» nor was it, «Wow that was incredible; let’s eat this once a week». It was just alright. My husband and I got a takeaway from there due to a howling craving for Chinese one night. We’ve just moved to the area and have no idea where the «good» places are since no one seems to Unilocal in Sutton. We’d walked past Mama Dumplings on the HIgh Street multiple times and there were usually people in there (a good sign). I now realize why the place wasn’t packed or anything. It’s decent food. The BBQ Ribs were the best, although super greasy (which could be a good thing). They were very polite while taking the order; something the people we ordered takeaway from in London were not. The woman acted as though we were already the best of friends!
Overall, I’ll probably end up going back to this place. I’m quite eager to try the dim sum they advertise. I’ll report back later.

Mama Dumpling’s in Sutton is a spacious and bright restaurant with a large menu. As this caters to a broad clientele, including lots of Chinese people there s a large range of Dim Sum, hence the Dumpling’s in the name of the restaurant. I would recommend the quick one plate meals, found at the back of the menu, such as twice cooked pork or tofu and rice, as well as their soups and appetisers such as ribs and shredded lamb. For dessert the toffee banana or lychees are hard to beat.
Mama Dumpling’s markets their restaurant as different to other Chinese restaurants and it is because it does not rely on traditional westernized versions of Chinese food, instead catering to people who like to try new dishes. As the food is prepared promptly this is an excellent place for quick lunches and because the restaurant is less formal you can go there on the spur of the moment and not worry about getting dressed up.
