Wigan Wallgate Railway Station

Wigan Wallgate is the smallest of the two stations, built to serve Wigan city center, it is operated by Northern trains and mainly serves to provide more local routes, compared to the Virgin Trains operated North Western across the way with trains into Birmingham New Street and London Euston.
The Station is fully step-​free covered, which is good and would be expected from Wigan Wallgate as it is a station built to serve Wigan city center.
They isn’t really a lot of facilities here, there are toilets but for anything else, you’d probably need to take a short walk into the city center to get any essentials before travelling.
As a station, it is okay, it is average and once again doesn’t seem to be as nice as North Western, although both stations seem to have its’ problems.
Most trains from this station, seem to go via Manchester Victoria with 3 trains per hour going into Manchester on a standard week-​day with Northern, it is just the final destination that changes with one train an hour to Manchester Airport, Blackburn, Southport and Bolton.
I still can’t help but question the need for this station with it only having 2 platforms, with a larger station being across the way with North Western and of course it would be better and easier to get all the trains in one place, which could mean missing your train, and having to get the lift off your platform, go into the other station which is a lot of work. It’s average but probably below average and 2^nd best in Wigan’s city center, hence sadly only deserves 2 stars.

Very little to be said other than that it is a typical train station. Seemed quite clean but certainly in need of modernising. As it is only a small station there is little confusion when it comes to platforms and the staff as with other stations are quite helpful

Sadly the bookstall as been taken out although there’s a newsagent across the road.

This station is one of the oldest and not very assessable if your bad on your legs. It has friendly enough staff and goes to variety of places but the long steps are a bit of a hike. It is also cold as the platforms are open.

I’ve used this station quite a few times and it’s not one of the best. There are only a couple of platforms, accessed by a long stair-​case (a lift is, however, available according to
). There’s no waiting-​room or café. The range of destinations is rather limited, as most long-​distance journeys serve Wigan North Western station (50 yards down the road) instead. One day, surely, they will merge the two stations — it would seem to make a lot more sense!

Wigan Wallgate train station is one of the main train stations in Wigan. Compared to the other main station in Wigan, it has become quite outdated and delapadated. fares are very cheap if traveling in Greater Manchester costing just £3 for an off-​peak adult return to Manchester. You can also buy a Greater Manchester Rail Ranger for £3.90, giving you unlimited travel in and around Greater Manchester. Wouldn’t go to the toilets to save my life, they are horrable!
